The Opportunity

As a thought leader, the Principal Data Scientist takes an active role in advancing the Data Science practice at Vanguard, not only by executing some of the most complex and high-priority modeling and measurement projects, but also by proactively identifying and building support for projects and capabilities that will provide the greatest business impact. In this role you will be expected to own advanced models from end to end, and make project and strategy recommendations by synthesizing a deep understanding of business functions and systems with an up-to-date understanding of what is possible in AI/ML and statistical analytics.

Who We Are

The Data Science team within the Institutional Investor Group plays a primary role in answering business-critical questions of causal measurement, prediction, and optimization. We apply AI/ML and statistical models to drive towards a variety of outputs focusing on enabling faster and more accurate data-driven decisions. Our work is mainly project-based and supports a wide variety of business functions, including marketing, sales, finance, relationship manager and thought leadership as part of strategy team. Example projects include personalization, natural language processing, time series, next best action, competitor game theory, client prospecting and retention.

Your Impact

  • Mentors and develops junior data scientists and analysts.

  • Leads the execution of large scale, more complex analytics projects. Applies significant quality control and risk assessment of the model, methodologies, outputs, and processes for major data science projects.

  • Leads and executes deep dive diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics to support data-driven business decision making. Creates alternative model approaches to assess complex model design and advance future capabilities.

  • Engages with senior leadership to understand and probe business processes in order to develop hypotheses. Brings structure to requests and translates requirements into an analytic approach.

  • Guides test design, research design, and model validation. Provides statistical consultation services. Serves as the analytics expert on cross functional teams for large strategic initiatives and contributes to the growth of the Vanguard analytic community.

  • Prepares and delivers insight presentations and action recommendations.

  • Communicates complex analytical findings and implications to business leaders.

  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Experience

  • Graduate degree in Statistics, Economics, Computer Science or other quantitative discipline

  • 8+ years' experience in machine learning and statistical programming in Python

  • Demonstrated expertise in model selection, model validation, and model development

  • Experience with AWS cloud platforms

  • Demonstrated history of identifying, executing and securing adoption of advanced analytics projects

  • Experience leading or representing analytics teams on ongoing cross-functional projects

  • Expertise in various statistical methodologies such as regression analysis, cluster analysis, decision trees, factor analysis/principal component analysis, time series, survival models, neural networks

  • Disposition to simplify: simply communicate complex statistical concepts with non-analytical business stakeholders

Qualifications

  • Minimum of eight years related work experience in analytical roles. Experience with data wrangling required - Programming skills to access, transform and prepare large scale data for statistical modeling. Experience utilizing statistical and machine learning methods required.

  • Undergraduate degree in Analytics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Statistics or related analytical field of study or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.

Principal Scientist position is responsible for leading manufacturing and technical development projects and process improvements. This position will facilitate the development and implementation of new processes, techniques & tools. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES: * Conducts research and development process improvements related to the production of Gypsum Wall Board * Works with all US & Canadian plants around new product development with a focus on glass-faced portfolio of products. * Establish a liner (paper and glass mat) competency in R&D. Develop technical expertise and lead innovation in facer to support various gypsum board projects through internal and external collaboration. Act as subject matter expert on facer technologies for gypsum board. * Stays aware of new technology applications and competitive uses of same in work with materials, products and processes, and in development of new knowledge and applies this to personal research/ products. * Develops and encourages innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) development and fosters IP development through the patent process with legal support. * Proven ability to work in a production environment, building relationships and establishing support to drive projects forward. * Utilizes sound technical knowledge of materials, processes, techniques, and products to improve on product performance to reduce costs, to maximize production, and to support new knowledge research. * Manages projects on time and within budget to meet business and customer objectives.
