As a thought leader, the Principal Data Scientist takes an active role in advancing the Data Science practice at Vanguard, not only by executing some of the most complex and high-priority modeling and measurement projects, but also by proactively identifying and building support for projects and capabilities that will provide the greatest business impact. In this role you will be expected to own advanced models from end to end, and make project and strategy recommendations by synthesizing a deep understanding of business functions and systems with an up-to-date understanding of what is possible in AI/ML and statistical analytics.
Who We Are
The Data Science team within the Institutional Investor Group plays a primary role in answering business-critical questions of causal measurement, prediction, and optimization. We apply AI/ML and statistical models to drive towards a variety of outputs focusing on enabling faster and more accurate data-driven decisions. Our work is mainly project-based and supports a wide variety of business functions, including marketing, sales, finance, relationship manager and thought leadership as part of strategy team. Example projects include personalization, natural language processing, time series, next best action, competitor game theory, client prospecting and retention.
Mentors and develops junior data scientists and analysts.
Leads the execution of large scale, more complex analytics projects. Applies significant quality control and risk assessment of the model, methodologies, outputs, and processes for major data science projects.
Leads and executes deep dive diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics to support data-driven business decision making. Creates alternative model approaches to assess complex model design and advance future capabilities.
Engages with senior leadership to understand and probe business processes in order to develop hypotheses. Brings structure to requests and translates requirements into an analytic approach.
Guides test design, research design, and model validation. Provides statistical consultation services. Serves as the analytics expert on cross functional teams for large strategic initiatives and contributes to the growth of the Vanguard analytic community.
Prepares and delivers insight presentations and action recommendations.
Communicates complex analytical findings and implications to business leaders.
Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
Graduate degree in Statistics, Economics, Computer Science or other quantitative discipline
8+ years' experience in machine learning and statistical programming in Python
Demonstrated expertise in model selection, model validation, and model development
Experience with AWS cloud platforms
Demonstrated history of identifying, executing and securing adoption of advanced analytics projects
Experience leading or representing analytics teams on ongoing cross-functional projects
Expertise in various statistical methodologies such as regression analysis, cluster analysis, decision trees, factor analysis/principal component analysis, time series, survival models, neural networks
Disposition to simplify: simply communicate complex statistical concepts with non-analytical business stakeholders
Minimum of eight years related work experience in analytical roles. Experience with data wrangling required - Programming skills to access, transform and prepare large scale data for statistical modeling. Experience utilizing statistical and machine learning methods required.
Undergraduate degree in Analytics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Statistics or related analytical field of study or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.
