Position Summary:

The Principal Data Architect is responsible for the data architecture and governance of our integrated Enrollment, Student Information, Learning Management, and Identity Management systems.

Primary Responsibilities:

Formulate and drive major data architecture decisions while overseeing coherent data integration strategy;

  • Design data specifications and governance process for integrated enterprise systems involved in K-12 virtual school SalesForce CommunityCloud based Enrollment, Student Information Systems, Learning Management Systems, Enterprise Integration Controller, and Enterprise Data Warehouse

Assist and mentor Software Engineers and Software Architects by providing guidance, technical insight, recommendations and technical requirements;

  • Ensure that the architectural solution best address the business's goals from both the functional and technical standpoint;

  • Cover technical project management for the data integration program, ensuring that teams across multiple Agile Release Trains are working from a single data plan

  • Perform schema and message queue architecture reviews with considerations on scalability, HA/DR, performance, code efficiency, cost, and architectural approach;

Guide and document development policies, procedures, and standards.

General Responsibilities:

Work closely with the other Software Architects in the planning and implementation of long-term architectural initiatives;

  • Help resolving occasional system issues,related to distributed systems data flow, monitoring and testability;

Maintain technical knowledge and understanding of the latest development methodologies by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations; and

Other duties as assigned.

The individual in this position will be working with business stakeholders and teams of engineers. Due to the nature of this position, the applicant will need the ability to work from home or during off-hours as necessary.

For your application to be considered, you must have the following:

At least 10 years' experience designing and developing data schemas and enterprise integration strategies

Experience in designing scalable, highly available, disaster recoverable, large, and robust enterprise applications;

At least 5 years' experience with SalesForce and related data technologies

Technical project management experience

Exceptional understanding of service oriented architectures;

Exceptional understanding of the cloud-based and distributed architectures;

Ability to work with limited guidance to reach desired solutions through collaboration with colleagues.

Ability to engage in senior level technology decision maker discussions related to agility, business value, and end to end information technology;

Understanding of both key Microsoft products and available competitive alternatives;

  • Experience with designing and implementing n-tier solutions;

  • Extensive knowledge of software and cloud design patterns;

  • Extensive experience analyzing business requirements, recommending (and delivering proof of concept) technical solutions from a build/buy/borrow perspective, and writing technical specifications for high-utilization enterprise web applications;

  • The ability to simultaneously handle multiple functions including:

  • Monitoring technical solutions across multiple projects;

  • Writing code;

  • Performing code and high-level approach reviews;

  • Writing technical requirements;

The ability to demonstrate work experience by providing examples, samples, and source code.


  • Logical and structured thinking

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • The ability to recommend technical solutions that match the industry/system's standards and overall design methodology


  • The ability to effectively deal with change

  • Able to work well with others including those outside of your core team

  • Good time management skills

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Contribute in the definition and implementation of data governance/Compliance practices. * Design both data structures and data integration practices. * Design highly available, highly scalable data services. * Lead the data architecture for the decision support systems including rules, policies, standards and models that govern and define the type of data collected and how it is used, stored, managed and integrated and its database systems. * Work with Data Management group to implement data modeling best practices for decision support systems. * Lead the technology and information architecture for the decision support systems. * Work closely with the infrastructure teams to create a physical environment to support data services. * Evaluate new and existing (internal and external) technologies and services in support of data services and data analytics objectives. * Prepare and present Cost Benefit Analysis of data platforms and tools. * Leads and directs the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. * Maintains database dictionaries, monitors standards and procedures and integration of systems through database design. * Prepares detailed reports which might include system requirements such as concurrent usage factors, data storage requirements, response rates, and discuss procedures for processing data through the use of data base management systems (DBMS) including relational data bases. * Performs database programming and supports systems design.
