Principal Data Analyst

As a Data Analyst at Capital One you will leverage analytic and technical skills to innovate, build, and maintain well-managed data solutions and capabilities to tackle business problems.

On any given day you will be challenged on three types of work Innovation, Data Management and Business Intelligence:


  • Act as key data lead to leverage versatile technical capabilities to drive the development, evolution, and implementation of data products, which enable self-service by data consumers

  • Explore industry trends, tools, and techniques in Open Source/Big Data/Digital domain

Business Intelligence

  • Develop prototypes and run experimentation for business intelligence tools, solutions, and techniques

  • Assist in development of standards and policies for business intelligence framework

Data Management

  • Evaluate data management, data quality and data access processes for gaps, inefficiencies and opportunities; provide recommendations for improvement

  • Implement solutions and processes for management and governance across data quality metrics, metadata, lineage, data access rights and business definitions

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Degree specialized in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics discipline

  • Scripting experience in (Python, Perl, JavaScript, Shell)

  • Strong desire and experience with data in various forms (data warehouses/SQL, unstructured data environments/PIG,HIVE, Impala)

  • Experience leading projects to deliver complex data management solutions; working with internal and external partners

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • At least 4 years of experience in at least one scripting language

  • At least 4 years of experience in querying and analyzing and working with data languages and platforms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics discipline
  • 4+ years' experience working BI reporting tools (i.e. Tableau and Business Objects)
  • 4+ years of experience working within process management and improvement methodologies Lean, Six Sigma, etc.
  • 2+ years of experience delivering Data Governance and Data Quality Management concepts and practices within the financial services industry
  • 2+ years of experience working with Agile development methodologies

MITRE operates the CAMH federally- funded research and development center (FFRDC) on behalf of US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). MITRE serves as an objective, independent, not for profit advisor supporting many of the complex analysis and critical thinking requirements that encompass business, policy, technology, and operational interests across HHS. The CAMH FFRDC is growing rapidly, particularly through increasing engagements with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These efforts are exceptional opportunities to have a substantial impact on health matters of national and international importance. MITRE is seeking additional staff with experience in Bioinformatics and Public Health to work on CAMH engagements that will have a marked and long-lasting impact on the health of the American people. Key Functions: The successful candidate will perform the following functions: * Advise federal stakeholders as they plan and manage large biomedical research projects and initiatives. * Provide technical thought leadership and innovative ideas, which help sponsors improve computational analysis methods to solve bioinformatics research challenges. * Translate scientific business needs into required computing, storage, tool and other technical requirements * Create reports and presentations for both lay and professional public health audiences that disseminate finding and promote recommendations to improve efficacy. * Participate in and lead highly functional and creative teams while building knowledge and working relationships across the Corporation. * Analyze and evaluate existing processes and data sources to derive actionable recommendations to improve operational efficacy in the public health domain. * Develop working relationships within MITRE across all levels of staff, management and executives to leverage the Corporation's deep experience across a broad set of domains. * Serve as a technical resource to other staff, including MITRE health care experts with backgrounds in law, health IT and other fields. Required Qualifications: * Master's or doctoral degree in data science, biomedical research, bioinformatics, or a related field (computer science, statistics, operations research, economics, computational biology, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, industrial engineering) * Experience in one or more languages (Python, R, Java, JavaScript, C++, ) and Linux scripting * Demonstrated experience applying two or more data analytics tools (e.g. R, MATLAB, Tableau) to business or mission problem sets * Demonstrated knowledge of cloud computing technologies and capabilities * Passion for emerging technologies and solving real-world public health mission problems * Strong technical documentation and presentation skills * Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, teaming environment * Experience working with the Federal Government in a consulting or advisory role * Experience developing in a cloud environment and/or migrating data, tools, and capabilities to a commercial cloud (preferably GCP or AWS) Preferred Qualifications: The selected candidate may have: * Advanced scientific knowledge of genomics, next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis including platforms, algorithms, tools and databases * Expertise working with the National Institutes of Health and/or a NIH-funded extramural research organization. * Demonstrated technical leadership and experience applying data sciences techniques, to include artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical modeling and/or data visualization Minimum Qualifications: BS and 8 years related experience.
