The Principal Civil Structural Engineer position is currently based at the Air Products Offices at the Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position is within GEMTE Global Engineering Organization reporting to the Manager of Civil-Structural Americas. The Engineering designs cover a wide range and sizes of industrial type applications; Air Separation Units (ASU), Hydrogen Processing Units, LNG facilities, and Technology improvements. We provide support and liaison to global manufacturing facilities and construction sites.

Job responsibilities are focused on an individual contributor preparing engineering designs as well as leading small teams and coordinating workload between global regions. The candidate will be responsible for leading C/S teams to execute conceptual (front-end engineering and design) and detailed (complete) C/S design projects while interfacing with global teams. Tasks include preparing calculations and drawing packages for manufacturing shops & site construction, attending project meetings, estimating engineering and design hours, managing budgets, developing schedules, working with other disciplines, and supporting site construction. Traveling to domestic locations and international offices may sometimes be necessary to support these projects.

The applicant must be well versed in wind and seismic analysis with an emphasis on moderate to high seismic classifications. Typical process related structures include pipe racks & pipe supports, skids & modules, equipment supports, and access platforms.

Foundation designs will include interpretation of geotechnical recommendations for design of deep and shallow foundation systems for various piling types, pile caps, soil-supported mats, containment systems, rotating machinery, and compressors. Dynamic analysis for compressor foundations is a plus.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Support project bid phase: Participate in man-hour estimates, develop design strategies, collaborate with Proposal team, and assist to estimate construction quantities.

  • Review project scope: participate to develop basis of design criteria, develop execution strategies, and deliverable schedules.

  • Design Phase: complete detailed calculations for foundations systems and site preparation drawings, check drawing deliverables, and support the conceptual layouts for steel structures.

  • Assist in coordinating workload between US & global teams.

  • Attend project & group meetings.

  • Interface with Design teams

  • Piping, Stress Analysis, Mechanical & Machinery, and Electrical & Instrumentation
  • Interface with other Functional teams
  • Project, Product, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Construction, and Technology.
  • Support work process review, improvements, and lessons learned

  • The job may require occasional travel domestic and international.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS Civil Engineering with primary focus on deep and shallow foundation design with secondary focus on steel structures. Knowledge of Dynamic analysis a plus.

  • PE licensed engineer, or in process of attaining license.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrate record of high performance with at least 10 years of design engineering experience including supporting fabrication shops and site construction activities.

  • Demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills. Team supervision and/or management experience is highly preferred.

  • Proven ability to be successful in a fast pace environment with minimal direction.

  • Proven ability to organize and handle multiple project assignments with record of success in safety, quality design deliverables, and successful schedule & budget.

  • Proficient in using structural finite element analysis software tools such as STAAD.Pro and proficient working knowledge of MathCad and Excel

  • Proficient working knowledge and understanding of industry accepted codes; IBC, ASCE 7, AISC Steel Construction Manual, AISC 341, AWS, and ACI 318

  • Working knowledge of Smart 3D (S3D) software tool a plus

  • Proficient knowledge of ASTM material standards.

You will work as part of the Process Gases Product Line (PGPL) Engineering Group, which is responsible for the design of Process Gas Plants (PGP) and related equipment for the production of hydrogen, syngas, helium, carbon monoxide, ammonia, syngas blends and carbon dioxide. The technologies supported cover high temperature processes and cryogenic processes. The Process Systems Engineers provide engineering and commissioning support for new large capital gas generation and gas processing plants generally dedicated to the Petrochemical industry. The backbone of the role starts with development and stewardship of P&ID's, leading operability reviews for new opportunities, development of plant operational logic, participation in hazard reviews, Participation in 3D model reviews, and field commissioning activities. You will be supporting diverse technologies that include both high temperature gas processing plant (Hydrogen Plants-Steam Methane Reformers, Gasifiers, and CO2 capture Amine based Plants as well as Cryogenic Hydrocarbon plants, CO and Syngas Cold Boxes, Nitrogen Rejection Units, H2 and Helium liquefaction units and Helium Recovery units. Travel is required, both domestic and international. Travel will include trips to plant sites, equipment fabricators, external engineering firms, and customer locations. It also may require extended ex-pat assignments in primarily the US, Netherlands, or distant cities within India (estimated at 15-25%). Primary responsibilities: * Develop and Manage the projects P&ID's, functional logic tables, alarm and trip settings, critical safety tables and operating procedures/training manuals. * Lead the projects Plant Operability review * Participate in the hazard review process and other safety evaluations (SIL and Fault Tree Experience a plus). * Coordinate functional issues involving plant reliability, operability and maintenance, while providing technical liaison support to Global Operations. * Monitor and provide feedback into the plant design by reviewing the 3D piping model and overall facility arrangement (Plot Plan). * You will lead DCS (Distributed Control System) staging (SAT, Software Acceptance Test) and field validation. * Participate and help plan field-commissioning activities including Operational Readiness Inspections (ORI), Plant Start-up and assist with the development and implementation of reliability test plans. * You will enrich the products with actual project experience. * Provide high level multi-discipline engineering supervision to outside engineering firms. Qualifications: * BS ChE/ME with at least 8 years of experience in new plant engineering with a strong focus on plant operations/startups. * Additional hands on experience in lieu of a ChE/ME degree will be considered. * You should possess a multi-discipline understanding in process engineering, DCS/PLC controls, process safety and equipment design. * Have the ability to make sound decisions weighing operability, reliability, capital costs and operating costs. * You will need to communicate effectively and seek out technical expertise as required. * Process experience in cryogenic plants, specialty gas plants, or in high temperature PGPs is desired.
