Role Summary

As a member of the Coating Additives Business Line's Applied Research & Technology organization, this position will contribute to the growth of the Business Line by growing business with existing products through technical service and product positioning as well as by developing commercially viable New Products that meet unmet market and critical customer needs. Additionally, this position will be responsible for providing applications testing needed to support quality complaint investigations and production changes for Coating Additives' specialty extenders.


  • Execute New Product development projects designed to meet unmet needs within the Coatings market by developing structure-property understanding, engaging the Synthesis group when new molecules are required, performing all needed laboratory research and using the company's work processes to capture ideas, develop project proposals, and have projects approved and prioritized

  • Efficiently execute Technical Service projects for customers, ensuring professional documentation and presentation of laboratory work in written reports and PowerPoint slides

  • Continually develop a broad understanding of market and additive performance requirements, testing methods, needed functionalities, structure-property relationships and the performance of the company's and competitors' additives in Architectural Coatings applications in order to position the Coating Additives product portfolio and identify gaps that could be filled by future New Products working with regional Market Segment Teams and participating in applications development projects whenever practical. Write and deliver professional technical papers at conferences and trade shows.

  • Provide applications testing needed to support quality complaint investigations and production changes for Coating Additives' specialty extenders.

  • Complete all required safety training, conduct hazards reviews and management of change, create and review safe work practices, and ensure that the hazards and regulatory compliances of all raw materials worked with and New Products developed are understood and communicated


  • Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering or a related scientific field or an MS degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science or Chemical Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in the Specialty Chemicals industry is required

  • Experience in the Speciality Chemical industry - synthetic chemistry is required and the ideal candidate will have experience building the chemical structure-property relationship understanding needed to identify optimal structures for achieving required functional attributes.

  • Outstanding practical laboratory skills and a strong commitment to maintaining a safe working environment, as well as to ensuring that Environmental, Health & Safety standards are met, are a necessity.

  • Experience with and continuing commitment to reading and understanding scientific and patent literature is required.

  • The ability to effectively work with diverse, multi-cultural and multi-functional teams from all backgrounds and based in all parts of the world is required.

  • Excellent project management skills will be required; therefore, a desire to acquire and continually build such skills is needed.

  • The ability to use scientific principles to describe and understand the results of applications testing and apply the results in project planning and execution is required.

This position is responsible for performing independent tasks of great complexity with no or limited guidance from senior personnel, demonstrate high problem solving skills and developing, implementing and managing projects. This position is also responsible for the daily laboratory organizational duties.  Responsibilities: Essential Duties * Plans and organizes chemical analysis of starting material, in process and finished product and stability studies and ensure adherence to approved test methods, specifications, procedures, equipment operating instruments and guidelines. * Responsible for the overall system of compilation, preparation and release of test results/ reports. * Conducts chemical analysis and experiments to develop new knowledge, materials, processes and products. * Analyzes samples from various sources to provide information on different materials. * Develops new techniques to analyze chemicals. * Collaborates with specialists to interpret data and writes reports about the results. * Analyzes test information to determine process efficiency and works on improvements.
