POSITION: Junior/Senior High School Principal

Brief Description of Position:

The Junior/Senior High School Principal provides focus and direction to curriculum and teaching and manages the organization efficiently to support student learning. As an instructional leader, the principal creates a culture of high expectation of performance, holds himself or herself and others responsible for student learning, enhances the capacity of teachers, and earns the respect of individuals in the school community. The principal is responsible for creating positive school change and supporting the district goals of ensuring academic excellence for all students, providing a safe, healthy and positive school environment, and enhancing communicaiton.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership to the staff in determining objectives and identifying school needs as the basis for developing long and shot-range plans

  • Interprets and implements the District-approved curriculum program in light of individual school needs

  • Develops school improvement plans with staff that aligns with district long and short term goals and uses student achievement data to improve the academic proficiency levels of students within his/her campus

  • Enlists the assistance of school resource personnel in the improvement of the program of the school

  • Assists the Superintendent, in her role as curriculum director, on secondary curriculum matters

  • Establishes an effective school administrative organization with clear lines of responsibility and with the necessary delegation of authority

  • Identifies, provides, assigns, and coordinates professional development opportunities for personnel within the school

  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of all assigned personnel in accordance with the District's adopted uniform guidelines for evaluation and assessment, recommends appropriate action in cases of substandard performances, and identifies and encourages individual teachers with leadership potential

  • Assigns all students in such a way as to encourage their optimum growth

  • Makes periodic appraisals of pupil progress

  • Uses student achievement data effectively with staff and students to support school improvement efforts

  • Monitors implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs by visiting classrooms regularly (conducting walk-through observations)

  • Develops school plans and organizational procedures for the health, safety, discipline and conduct of students as established in District procedures

  • Plans, coordinates and evaluates the program of pupil services including guidance and counseling

  • Plans, supervises, and directs the business operation of the school in accordance with District policies and procedures

  • Makes plans for the most effective use of curriculum materials, instructional supplies, equipment, building facilities, and school grounds

  • Carries out a program of community relations as a means of interpreting and furthering school programs through parent and other community organizations

  • Serves as a District officer in communication between central administration and teachers and classified employees in the school, and interprets and implements District policies in the school

  • Plans, coordinates, and reviews the work of special education

  • Promotes working conditions and attitudes conducive to high morale and effective accomplishment of district goals and objectives

  • Carries on a human relations program in order to maintain high morale of the school staff

  • Be accountable to staff and community for the overall effectiveness of the school, making sure that all programs are educationally sound and administratively feasible

  • Remains cognizant of educational developments by maintaining professional memberships and contacts

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Education Must hold a valid California Adminstrative Services credential.

  • Holds a Masters Degree in educational leadership or related field.

  • Ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish desirable.

  • Experience Successful teaching experience at the secondary level; cognizance of innovations in secondary education; ability and desire to use and evaluate their effectiveness in the instructional program. Successful experience in providing leadership in schools with a racially, linguistically, and culturally diverse student population. A minimum of three (3) years administrative experience at the secondary level is preferable
