Position Description

Principal - xalilc (Halilts) Elementary School

Building administrators in the Bainbridge Island School District serve as equity-focused instructional leaders, committed to carrying out the core tenets of the BISD District Improvement Plan as key members of the district leadership team.

The Principal at xalilc (Halilts) Elementary School is charged with the critical work of collaborating with staff, students, and families to promote a culture of belonging; facilitating the ongoing improvement of teaching and learning; and ensuring the growth and development of xalilc students.

Essential Functions

  • Designs and facilitates quality professional development to certificated and classified staff members focused on best practices and in alignment with the District Improvement Plan.

  • Engages in essential conversations for ongoing improvement of the school with a clear focus on the unique interests, capacities, and growing social awareness of elementary school students.

  • Assumes responsibility for modeling, teaching, and promoting collaboration among staff.

  • Creates and sustains a school culture that values and responds to the characteristics, identities, strengths and needs of each learner.

  • Consistently encourages and supports behaviors and activities that explicitly align with the school's mission and vision.

  • Analyzes and interprets multiple data sources to inform school-level, student-centered decisions.

  • Supports staff in aligning instruction, curriculum and assessment to state and local learning goals.

  • Incorporates strategies that engage all students and families, particularly those that historically have been underserved.

  • Strategically manages fiscal resources and staff to improve student learning.

  • Communicates with families frequently and proactively, in support of teachers and students.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience as a champion of equity and inclusion in the K-12 educational setting.

  • Understanding of and experience with the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) at classroom, school, or district level.

  • Knowledge of the foundations and core practices of PBIS and SEB support.

  • Evidence of strong skills in instructional strategies, curriculum development, and assessment.

  • Demonstrated success in facilitating adult learning, providing visionary leadership, and building strong relationships with all stakeholder groups.

  • Ability to communicate clearly with a wide range of audiences and for a variety of purposes, including strong written communication skills and large group presentation skills.

  • Approaches student behavior with a focus on restorative practices and preserving student dignity.

  • Self-starter and independent worker with strategies for time management and organization.

  • Willingness to take lead on school and district projects and initiatives as key member of the district administrative team.

  • Strengths in creating a vibrant, inclusive and warm school culture and climate for students, staff and families.

Education & Experience

Required:

  • Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State Administrative credential.

  • Three years of demonstrated successful teaching experience and at least one year of educational leadership and/or supervision experience.

Preferred:

  • Specific training as a school administrator.

  • Master's degree in education or related field.
