We are looking for a Principal Applied Scientist who can bring deep applied science expertise and a track record of shipping at-scale, AI-enabled, intelligent user-facing experiences to drive vision and execution for Microsoft 365 AI. Microsoft believes that artificial intelligence will play a critical role in accomplishing that mission. The Microsoft Search, Assistant, and Intelligence (MSAI) group is leading this effort. We are working to change the lives and work of hundreds of millions by building deep intelligence into M365 Chat, Search, Recommendation and Knowledge powered scenarios that people use every day in Outlook, Teams, Windows, Edge, Office, SharePoint, and OneDrive.

As a Principal Applied Scientist in MSAI, you would work in an exciting and fast-paced environment, collaborating closely with teams across the company, including Microsoft Research. You will work as part of an organization that brings together talent in the areas of large language models, recommender systems, machine learning, deep learning, graph learning, information retrieval, software engineering, and responsible AI. Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of design and coding experience

  • 4+ years of experience of large-scale machine learning

  • Dedicated C#, or Java or Python or C/C++ coding skills

  • Free thinkers with ability to socialize and drive their ideas into technology are highly desired.

  • Ph.D. preferred but not required

  • Exposure with federated learning, eyes of learning and knowledge of NLP

Applied Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
