National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) has an opening for a Principal Application System Engineer in Washington, DC.

Job Duties: Responsible for the development and enhancement of Amtrak's platform and applications.

Design, develop, and provide support for multiple applications.

Drive complex IT software development projects, provide designs, and set standards. Liaise with Business, Technical and Operations teams, and respond to change and trouble tickets.

Provide innovative and strategic technical direction to support Amtrak's vision. Monitor the platform for failures, exceptions and threshold issues. Tune and optimize application performance.

Test applications for product upgrades and patches. Communicate with customers and upper management about platform and/or ticket status. Work on occasional minor enhancements as remaining work capacity allows.

Liaise with stakeholders to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions. Perform development of customer enhancements, and maintenance tasks. Utilize adaptable communication skills to effectively translate between technical and business languages.

Educate project team members on business unit goals and objectives and educate the business on the value of information technology. Identify, propose and oversee the execution of business solutions as well as interpret documents communicating business needs and requirements. Assess the client needs through direct interaction and identify opportunities to develop the business through effective use of technology.

Requirements:
Employer will accept Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field, followed by six years of progressive, post-baccalaureate work experience in job offered or six years of progressive, post-baccalaureate work experience in a related occupation.

Position requires: 1) 3 years of experience in Devops leveraging Jenkins, BitBucket, Git, and cloud templates; 2) 4 years of experience in the rail/travel industry and related IT projects; 3) Experience with software programming using JEE, OO design patterns, Oracle/SQL, NoSQL, MQ, Web Services, XSLT, JAXB, JDOM, JSON, JNDI, HTTPS, and HTML; 4) Experience with system analysis; 5) Experience with Javascript frameworks; 6) Experience with REST APIs; 7) AWS cloud development experience, including Lamdba, Kinesis, DynamoDB, and NodeJs; 8) Experience with Agile projects; 9) Experience with build and deployments in WebSphere and JBOSS environments; 10) Experience developing applications using Java/Spring Boot, and designing and developing database components using PostgreSQL DB or Oracle; 11) Experience developing technical design documents based on business requirements and developing applications based on technical/functional design documents; and, 12) Experience with AWS development, code testability standards, and JUnit/Mockito. SUMMARY OF DUTIES The Principal Systems Engineer oversees major complex projects providing subject matter expertise and technical direction, serving as a technical lead and point of escalation. The role is accountable and responsible for systems analysis, design, development, integration, and enhancements. The Principal Systems Engineer will be expected to be involved and take a lead technical role in day‐to‐day enhancement and development of Amtrak's systems and will have demonstrated expertise in Cloud technology, middleware/DB platforms, networking, packaged applications, system integration, or SW development. Involvement may also include the following: responding to change requests, Tier‐3 trouble ticket resolution, monitoring platforms for failures/ exceptions/threshold issues, performance tuning, optimizing applications performance and testing. applications for product upgrades and patches. This role works closely with stakeholders to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions. These solutions must be aligned with business goals and IT strategies, as well as, in compliance with the organization's architectural standards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Serve as a Trusted Advisor of Salesforce platform in both technical and functional aspects at a program level. * Define high level & detailed architecture of the platform, community and related components. * Maintain architectural integrity of the application by guiding individual solution designs. * Advice and mentor teams with best practices for enterprise architecture functions such as Security, Performance, Development Process, and Application Governance. * Keeper of Platform related documentation and white papers * Participate in ongoing architecture review and technical design support to ensure all areas of Enterprise Systems are implementing solutions consistent with the target architecture * Provide guidance on integration development best practices, Enterprise Architecture standards, environment management & testing. * Provide strong leadership for technical design functions on assigned projects, Proof of Concept, feasibility studies, roadmap development and strategies. * Help align Enterprise Systems strategy and planning with application development and business roadmaps * Troubleshoot key implementation issues and demonstrate ability to drive to successful resolution. * Lead the evaluation of business and technical requirements from a senior level. * Liaise with Salesforce customer success and product functions to maintain ongoing technical relationship * Owns and leads the systems development approach as an engineering exercise; confirms requirements are clear, follows a documented development/build methodology and makes sure a robust unit and system/integration testing regimen is followed to deliver solutions per designs. * Outlines, develops and documents clear requirements and technical specifications that follow an established methodology. * Creates and updates documentation as necessary to ensure architectures, designs and other descriptions are up to date and describe the as‐deployed system. * Consults in the development/build planning process with customers, IT business systems analysts, architects, information security, and other team members, taking the lead on all technical issues/solutions. * Conducts or contributes to the design specifications and assists in sizing technical requirements. * Develops technical solutions to meet defined requirements including changes, enhancements or development of new infrastructure, platform and other systems. * May oversee or assist with oversight of third‐party technical resources providing services to Amtrak. * Ensures all work is in harmony with all defined industry and company standards as well as ensures that overall implementation is aligned with Amtrak's technology strategies. * Adheres to quality standards and procedures. Reviews modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards and SLAs. May assist in defining development guidelines and standards to be utilized in system/solution development/integration.
