Scope of Work

Develops, maintains, and facilitates predictive/preventive maintenance program for the Solid Waste Department.

Essential Job Duties

  • Plans, prepares, schedules all preventative maintenance on all Sanitation fleet equipment

  • Assists in developing and implementing preventative maintenance program

  • Develops detailed work plans for the Sanitation equipment and establishes priority schedule for all Sanitation vehicles as it relates to preventative maintenance

  • Extensive use of fleet asset software will be required with particular emphasis on service requests, asset assignment, service status, work order history, preventative maintenance schedules.

  • Produce and maintain reports that track preventative maintenance costs and down time of sanitation fleet

  • Meets with parts manager and service manager and makes purchases of products for preventative maintenance for the Sanitation fleet

  • Responsible for maintaining all warranties through the manufactures recommended scheduled preventive maintenance for new Sanitation fleet equipment.

  • Works in conjunction with parts manager and service manager for inventory of preventative maintenance needs

  • Perform all preventive maintenance on all the Sanitation equipment to include greasing both the chassis and the bodies to help extend the life of all moving parts and cut down on down time.

  • Check all the lights and mirrors and replace and or repair as needed.

  • Check all tires and check for air leaks coming from the brakes or air tanks. Report to the service center for tire issues and report to the Garage for any air leaks.

  • Check for any fluid leaks and report to the Garage.

  • Drain all air tanks daily.

  • Liaison for city fleet division as it relates to preventative maintenance schedules and work plan for Sanitation equipment

  • Will provide training to end users on fleet software

  • Reports to the Solid Waste Manager

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Physical and Environmental Conditions

  • Ability to sit, stand, squat and move about an office and vehicle maintenance facility

  • Ability to sit, stand and transport self from building to building. Ability to drive a vehicle to and from various worksites.

  • Employee will work in extreme temperatures bending, kneeling twisting, and climbing to make repairs on vehicles or equipment. Employee can work with mechanical, biological, chemical, and electrical hazards while repairing vehicles and equipment.

  • Employee is also required to perform heavy lifting or machinery and parts frequently

Required Qualifications

Ability to effectively communicate with employees, management, and vendors to diagnose repairs and order materials for repair. Employee also communicates with other employees in the work group and in other departments

Must provide basic hand tools

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  • Computer word processing skills are necessary.

  • Experience in developing and maintaining fleet preventative maintenance program.

  • Experience with fleet/asset management software

  • Knowledge of proper tools used in maintenance and fabricating parts and equipment.

  • Ability to safely use tools, vehicles, and equipment such as emissions and battery testers, electronic oscilloscopes and brake lathes, bench grinders, lifts and jacks, air conditioning and recovery systems, trucks, tractors, forklifts, and hand tools such as air tools and welding and cutting torches.

  • Skill in reading and practical application of manuals, blueprints and other similar specifications used by city departments.

  • Ability to read, measure and calculate types and sizes of materials needed and ability to reason amount of time that will be used in the actual maintenance process.

  • Knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance including brakes, springs, diesel engine repair and hydraulic systems

Minimum Education, Experience, and Certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 3-5 years of responsible experience in fleet maintenance and planning.

  • Knowledgeable in mechanical work and vehicle parts.

  • A valid Texas driver's license is required. Class B CDL preferred.
