The Virginia Council on Economic Education is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization that is dedicated to ensuring that Virginia's students gain the economic and financial knowledge and skills they need to succeed. VCEE accomplishes this by advocating for strong Standards of Learning and preparing Virginia's K-12 teachers to effectively teach these topics to their students through professional development and classroom resources provided to teachers at no cost to them. Last year, VCEE benefited more than 2,400 teachers and 136,000 students, and 63% of the teachers attending our core professional development programs were from Title 1 schools.

VCEE was co-founded by the Dean of the VCU School of Business in 1970 and has remained an important part of VCU's community outreach efforts since then. As a separate line item on the Budget of the Commonwealth of Virginia, VCEE receives an annual appropriation from the state, and that grant is administered through VCU.

The position of President & CEO for VCEE is a full-time university staff position. Position Summary:

The Virginia Council on Economic Education (VCEE) seeks a highly motivated and qualified President & CEO. The President of VCEE provides strategic leadership, direction, and overall coordination of the organization to deliver toward the mission of ensuring Virginia students have the economic and financial knowledge to succeed in our dynamic economy.

This role is responsible for the leadership of the organization and coordination across the network of affiliated Centers for Economic Education located within colleges and universities across the Commonwealth. The President is also responsible for defining and aligning efforts toward strategic business goals (with support and approval from the Board), achieving these strategic business goals, maintaining a highly productive work environment, and ensuring the long-term financial viability of the organization.

The President is a highly visible ambassador for VCEE, collaborating with educators, state and local government officials, corporate and individual sponsors, and community leaders to maximize the impact of the organization in delivering its mission. This includes advocating for effective standards and measures for economic literacy in K-12 students in the Commonwealth and ensuring that Virginia's K-12 teachers have access to, and take advantage of, quality professional development and programs which will ensure their students are learning in accordance with these standards.

This position is the highest level of leadership in the organization and reports directly to the Board of Directors in coordination with the VCU School of Business. The President is responsible for managing VCEE staff members and working effectively with the Board.

Typical Responsibilities:

Strategic Direction

  • Leads strategic planning efforts and initiatives to improve efficiencies and enhance the effectiveness of VCEE-both through long-term goal setting and short-term prioritization. Cascades goals and specific actions and measures into roles and responsibilities linked with measuring performance.

    Scans external conditions that might affect the implementation of the Strategic Plan, assessing the impact of external factors to VCEE while providing strategic recommendations on how to address these in delivering on VCEE's mission. Provides visionary leadership for the organization in alignment with the strategic plan and Board priorities. Identifies opportunities to manage overall profitability and financial stability while achieving the mission. Manages the strategic design of the overall organizational structure (in consultation with the Board).

Advocacy and Stakeholder Relations

  • Effectively advocates for VCEE, specifically, and for economic and financial education, in general. Serves as the spokesperson for VCEE, seeking opportunities to speak publicly, and effectively represent the organization.

    Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with business partners, including the Virginia Department of Education, the Virginia Board of Education, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, corporate benefactors, foundations, individual donors, the Council for Economic Education, key members of the Virginia General Assembly, and other relevant nonprofit organizations. Works with members of the General Assembly to educate them about the impacts of proposed legislation and to deliver remarks at committee meetings in support of, or in opposition to, specific bills that have been introduced. Manages relationships and grants with affiliated universities and their centers for economic education, ensuring a mutually beneficial relationship.

    Serves as a resource for the Virginia Department of Education on matters relating to economic and financial education and literacy, lending expertise and participating in rewrites of relevant Standards of Learning. Provides leadership and advocacy in fundraising and long-term financial development efforts, supporting sustainable financial stability for the organization.

Mission Delivery

  • Maintains accountability for the overall successful delivery of VCEE programs and other deliverables. Translates strategic goals into execution activities and manages the overall organization delivery plan.

    Infuses innovation and challenges traditional approaches in designing and managing delivery. Measures and reports progress against key performance indicators and appropriate measurements of the effectiveness of VCEE and its impact in the Commonwealth. Assumes a high degree of organizational awareness and thinks critically about the implications of decisions and managerial actions on the organization, while managing the overall organization structure.

    Manages the overall VCEE financial plan and budget to ensure fiscal soundness throughout the fiscal year and in annual planning (balancing the mission of VCEE with available resources). Acts as a change agent and actively supports decisions of the Board. Communicates effectively and transparently with the Board.

Team Supervision

  • Guides, leads, reviews, advises, verifies, observes, and manages the work of direct reports. Directs and supports the head of Programs to ensure that all programs offered by VCEE are current, relevant, high-quality, and aligned with VCEE's mission and objectives.

    Directs and supports the head of Development and all development efforts to attract sufficient revenues to fund the operation and all activities of the organization. Directs and supports the head of Marketing and Communications to increase and enhance visibility with all stakeholder groups, including teachers, state and local education policymakers, partner universities, the business community, and potential funding partners through print promotional pieces, email marketing, social media platforms, video production, one-on-one relationships, and emerging/evolving methods and channels. Manages and builds a strong team through coaching and mentoring, fostering the learning and development of staff. Develops and implements succession plans.
