Primary Purpose of Position: 

The Preservation and Imaging Technician produces digital images used to create security microfilm of government agency records according to record schedules.  It also creates digital images for other division preservation projects.

This includes preparation and digitization of archival records according to professional and division standards.

This position is responsible for database management of the division's microfilm holdings under the direction of the unit head and assists with patron, agency, and division requests for services such as microfilm digitization and microfilm duplication orders.  In addition, this position assists with preservation activities of the Collections Management Branch including inventories, surveys, collection storage monitoring, disaster preparedness activities and other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working knowledge of library and/or archives policies, procedures or operations or working knowledge of applicable functional areas in relation to overall operation of a library and/or archives.

  • Working knowledge of digital imaging software for image capture and/or manipulation.

  • Working knowledge of library, archives and museum preservation practices.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to chemicals, dust, and mold is possible.

  • Ability to use and demonstrate understanding of library/archives information management systems, databases and computer software in a network environment to record and retrieve information.

  • Ability to interpret guidelines and answer inquiries regarding processes, services, and operations of Imaging Unit and the Archives.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and maintain effective working relationships with other agency staff, governmental officials, and the public.

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and balance multiple projects.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Thorough knowledge, demonstrated through work experience and/or academic coursework, of the principles and practices of archives and records management including metadata and description standards.

  • Demonstrated experience with reference and search-and-retrieval skills, attained through work experience and/or academic coursework, to assist internal and external patrons.

  • Demonstrated experience digitizing rare and valuable book and paper artifacts and/or working with microfilm.

  • Demonstrated experience using library/archives information management systems and digital imaging software and equipment.

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience with North Carolina government record keeping practices.

  • Demonstrated experience with library, archives, and museum preservation practices.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Section/Unit Description: 

The Imaging Unit of the Collections Management Branch is responsible for the creation of security images of public records for state, local and municipal agencies. The Unit maintains physical and intellectual control for all microfilm through transfer, accession, description and storage practices consistent with professional standards.

The Unit handles reference and access services for microfilm holdings and provides various records management services to government agencies in North Carolina. The Unit is also responsible for digitization and preservation reformatting of collections and for the overall protection of the State Archives' security microfilm holdings in its vaults.

Division Description: 

The Division of Archives and Records seeks to be a national leader in providing quality guidance on information stewardship in North Carolina and in creating simplified and integrated access to authentic information. We document the history and culture of our state through diverse collecting.
