Overview Position Summary

The Preschool Literacy Tutor is embedded into a classroom of children ages 3 5 to develop children's early literacy skills in preparation for Kindergarten, serving alongside a teacher. Tutors are trained in research-based early literacy strategies and collaborate with the classroom teaching staff to enhance daily literacy opportunities and conduct literacy assessments to increase the number of children on target with early reading predictors. This is an AmeriCorps service member position with the AmeriCorps program, Minnesota Reading Corps.


Essential Functions

Early Literacy Instruction and Assessment

  • Provide intentional, meaningful and fun literacy instruction during all parts of the day to improve early literacy skills, specifically focusing on skills that give children the opportunity to talk, read, write, and play.

  • Implement elements of the Literacy and Math Rich Schedule, including greeting children at arrival, helping children write their name at sign-in, having "Strive for 5" mealtime conversations, writing a daily message, journaling, enhancing literacy during choice time, and leading literacy-rich transitions.

  • Provide targeted early literacy support to a minimum of 5-7 children daily in a one-on-one and/or small group setting using scripted early literacy interventions; achieve a high degree of fidelity to the scripted interventions.

  • Assess, with high level of accuracy, child outcomes and progress using tri-annual benchmark assessments and ongoing progress monitoring assessments.

  • Identify students who qualify for targeted one-on-one and/or small group Reading Corps tutoring services based on assessment data with direction from the Internal Coach and Master Coach.

  • Enhance the classroom literacy environment, as described in the Early Literacy and Language Classroom Observation (ELLCO), to support the classroom in achieving a "Basic" or better score on the ELLCO by spring.

  • Record student and program data completely and accurately in an online database on a weekly basis; maintain confidentiality of all student data.

  • Participate in on-site coaching sessions (includes observation of tutor) two times per month to review student progress, plan, problem-solve, and set goals; act on constructive feedback from coaching sessions.

  • Provide opportunities for family literacy involvement for Reading Corps children, including implementing the Reading Corps family engagement literacy intervention "Talk, Read and Write with Me!"


  • Communicate and interact with students in an age and developmentally appropriate way.

  • Communicate regularly and effectively with Internal Coach, Master Coach, Reading Corps staff, classroom teacher(s), and site personnel.


  • Demonstrate regular, timely attendance and adherence to hours as scheduled.

  • Commit to service for the full service term(s), serving the total commitment of hours within the term(s).

  • Attend all required Reading Corps sponsored training sessions, meetings, and coaching sessions, including Member Meet Ups (when applicable); travel as necessary.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform assignments and/or duties as assigned by Internal Coach, Master Coach, or Program Manager, excluding activities that would displace a staff member.

  • Represent Reading Corps at site-sponsored activities (e.g., family night) and provide education about Reading Corps and general literacy awareness.

  • Actively participate in service projects and commemorating days such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (as applicable). These may include evening and/or weekend hours.

  • Be an ambassador of the program by submitting Great Stories and participating in outreach activities.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older by your start date.

  • Must have at least a high school diploma or a GED by your start date.

  • Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.

  • Must pass mandatory Reading Corps background checks.

  • Must not have served 4 or more prior terms of service with AmeriCorps State or National.

  • Speak, read, and write English fluently.

  • Interest in education, specifically helping young children develop early language and literacy skills.

  • Dedication to community service.

  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.

  • Energetic, results-oriented, student-focused style.

  • Strong planning and time-management skills.

  • Strong capacity to be flexible and adaptable to varied circumstances, paired with a conscientious commitment to adhere to the Reading Corps tutoring model with fidelity.

  • Consistent follow-through.

  • Ability to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff.

  • Ability to work with diverse personalities.

  • Ability to adapt to a sometimes challenging and high-pressure environment.

  • Strong personal standards of excellence, ethics, and integrity.

  • Preferred: College degree or equivalent work experience.

This is a full time position (1.0FTE), Monday through Friday, 8:00AM – 5:00PM. Responsibilities/Job Description The Social Worker-MSW-Home Care provides a wide range of clinical social work services and interventions to assist individuals, families, groups or communities to restore, enhance, or protect their capacity for productive social functioning and coping with the consequences of their illness and health care status. The Home Care Social Worker is able to assume independent practice and takes a leadership role in patient care, program and professional issues that they confront in their daily practice with minimal supervisory guidance. * Plans and implements treatment and transition care plans based upon a psychosocial assessment that is integrated into an interdisciplinary care plan. * Provides a range of social work interventions that include casework, counseling crisis intervention, case management, and group work methods in assisting patient and families reach their goals. Identifies and recognizes rapidly changing situations and quickly intervenes to prevent or resolve the emotional crisis, and increased LOS, or unnecessary admissions. * Arranges, mobilizes, utilizes, and may coordinate a comprehensive range of community resources which most effectively meet the identified patient and family needs. * Takes leadership role in facilitation of interdisciplinary communication and guides team members interactions with patient/families experiencing complex psychosocial issues. * Formally and informally educates patient/family and health care team members regarding the social work role, pertinent patient care issues, and population specific information. * Serves as a preceptor or field instructor for social work graduate and undergraduate training as appropriate to their skills related to a range of psychosocial issues and interventions. * Serves as patient advocate and liaison with physicians, families and community to ensure continuity of care. * Documents patient and family assessment, history, diagnosis, treatment and transition care plan, and progress, in the medical record. * Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with Fairview and Social Work Services standards, policies, and procedures. * Identifies and participates in CQI, research and program evaluation initiatives that focus on improving health care services at a service, program. Qualifications Education: Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited social work program.
