Job Description: The Preschool Intervention and Referral Specialist (PIRT) will support the vision for the Hackensack School District by ensuring that all Pre-K students in the district have access to high quality preschool classroom environments and instruction. Reporting to the Director of Curriculum and the Director of Special Services, the PIRT Specialist is responsible for assisting Preschool Staff in addressing children's persistent challenging behaviors. This will include the design and delivery of formal and informal professional learning experiences to district preschool teachers based on reflective coaching outcomes and data from relevant structured data assessments. Moreover, the PIRT Specialist will provide support and suggested interventions to preschool teachers, families and other early childhood personnel so that all children can succeed within the general education classroom.

Role and Responsibilities:

Major responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides professional development, as needed, to early childhood staff including classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, special education support staff, administrative staff and parents and families on the district's social and emotional curriculum and the four levels of the pyramid model including Positive Behavior Supports, the district's PIRT Protocol and Request for Assistance (RFA);

  • Coordinates the administration of a developmentally based screening such as the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R);

  • Establishes a PIRT assistance Protocol including a Request for Assistance (RFA) form;

  • Establishes and manages a case file for each child with an RFA, including a PIRT Intervention plan if needed;

  • Conducts visits to district preschool classrooms to observe, coach, model strategies, make verbal and written recommendations, and provide feedback regarding a child's Intervention Plan;

  • Modifies and adapts a child's Intervention Plan throughout the year as necessary;

  • Evaluates the progress of the child and, if necessary, facilitates a written referral to the school district Child Study Team (CST);

  • Facilitates the transition of all PIRT case files to kindergarten and CST as necessary;

  • Develops, facilitates and presents professional learning experiences to district staff;

  • Researches, interprets and disseminates current developments in learning, instructional strategies and classroom management through reading of professional education journals, active participation in professional development, and involvement in professional organizations;

  • Provides guidance to in-district teachers on ordering materials that will enhance the classroom environment and delivery of instruction;

  • Actively participates in committees and other meetings that drive the mission of Hackensack's Early Childhood Program to provide high-quality education to Pre-K students;

  • Takes on special projects as needed; and

  • Reports to the Director of Curriculum and the Director of Special Services

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required from an accredited college or university

  • Hold a valid NJ educational services certificate in one of the following areas:

  • LDTC

  • School Psychologist

  • Social Worker

  • Speech Language Specialist

  • Behavioral Therapist Endorsement

  • Special Education Teacher Endorsement

  • Appropriate Standard New Jersey Teacher of the Handicapped Certificate or New Jersey P-3 and TOSWDCertificates

  • Three to five years of work experience in areas related to early childhood education

  • Demonstrated knowledge, training experience, and understanding of early childhood education, child growth and development, curriculum best practices, the Pyramid Model, Positive Behavior Supports, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to early childhood education

  • A valid driver's license as well as current insurance and vehicle with valid registration

  • Required criminal history background check, physical and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status

Salary: As per HBOE/HEA Agreement
