Job Title: Special Education PreK Assistant

Supervisor: Building Principal

QUALIFICATION: Qualified according to Whiteside/Lee/Ogle ROE and ISBE qualifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned by appropriate school educational staff.

  • Assist in special education program implementation activities (screening, placement, etc.)

  • Assist in preparation of federal, state and local regulatory reports when required

  • Administer classroom/achievement tests to special education student(s) in a small group setting under the direct supervision of appropriate certified staff.

  • Assist regular classroom teacher and / or special education teacher(s) in implementing adapted assignments to individual special education students. These will vary depending upon the individual student's IEP.

  • Review applicable student(s) instructional plan with the regular classroom teacher(s) and/or special education teacher(s), and assist with student transition, when necessary.

  • Assist the special education teacher(s) with collection of information required to formulate IEPs and report cards for the applicable special education student(s).

  • Provide tutoring of special education student(s) and monitor study/review groups, individually or in a group setting, under the direct supervision of appropriate classroom teacher (ex-interact with student in a special education computer setting)

  • Implementation of any discipline, classroom, or behavior management strategies using the same techniques of the regular classroom teacher(s)

  • Complete before and after school duties, as assigned.

  • Alert regular classroom teacher and/or special education teacher to any potential problems or special concerns regarding a student (crisis intervention)

  • maintain a high level of ethical behavior regarding confidentiality of special education student(s) records.

  • Participate in appropriate special education staff in-service training and attend educational staff meetings, parent teacher conferences, as needed, IEP meetings, as required.

  • Provide physical assistance for special education student(s) during their educational efforts and daily routines throughout the school day, as necessary.

  • Provide assistance to the appropriate classroom and/or special education teacher in moving furniture for classroom activities, and receiving/storing supplies associated with implementing the special education program.

  • Operate basic computer applications required to develop information for reports and program literature, as needed.

  • Provide operator level cleaning/maintenance of computers and office machines associated with special education programs.

  • Provide assistance with the 1:1 student environment to meet the needs of appropriate students.

  • Provide assistance with 1:1 personal student care such as feeding, hygiene, and toileting.

  • Assist in carrying out programs prescribed by therapy staff such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position may have supervisory roles during before or after school duty as well as lunchroom supervision.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma/General education degree (GED)

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, Ability to speak effectively before small groups of school staff and the general public.

MATHEMATIC SKILLS: Ability to perform basic math skills, as needed.

REASONING SKILLS: Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions given in writing or verbally. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with individuals possessing varied educational and social backgrounds.

  • Ability to work in a confidential business atmosphere.

  • Ability to type and work effectively with applicable computer applications, as needed.

  • Ability to effectively operate telephone, fax, copier and other building communication systems.

  • Ability to access and use the district network and email.

  • Ability to create a file system and file accurately, either paper or digital.

  • Ability to- compose letters, memos, or other written materials accurately.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.

  • Possess a willingness to work overtime as required to accomplish the goals of SPS.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Note: The job duties of providing physical assistance to appropriate student, moving furniture during classroom activities, climbing step stools, viewing colored graphs and/or small multiple figures on a computer screen and/or paper, operating and performing operator level cleaning/maintenance on office machine are a few of the references used for the above physical requirement parameters.
