The Preclinical Services Research Technician provides support for the Patient Derived Xenograft (PDX) program as well as other preclinical cancer model services provided by the Department of Comparative Medicine (CM) at Fred Hutch. In support of the PDX Program and other preclinical services this position will perform a variety of technical procedures related to studies, keep appropriate records, maintain databases, manage breeding, and stay within the specifications of IACUC approved protocols. This position will be expected to operate specialized equipment and to perform specialized procedures as required. Completion of these tasks will be expected to be conducted independently. A clear understanding of research protocols is required for the work. This position will report to the PDX Program Lead.

The Preclinical Services Research Technician is classified as essential personnel and, as such, is required to work with minimal amount of absences and during all Center closures except in the event of a major disaster when access to animal housing and use facilities is prohibited by governmental emergency personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Preclinical model support
  • Provide support for aseptic surgery including performing surgical prep, implantations, recovery, tumor harvest, sample processing and data collection; Perform procedures including anesthesia and anesthesia monitoring, blood draws, injections, tumorectomies, and implantations; Provide monitoring for cancer and related preclinical murine models; Health monitoring of mouse colony/models
  • Data Acquisition and Management
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks and project files. Record data daily into multiple custom databases, including colony database, specimen database, and tumor growth logs, Work extensively in SharePoint, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word etc. including custom software used for supporting the program
  • Customer service
  • Establish and maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with faculty in order to provide high quality customer service; Interact ( in person, on phone, and via email) with PIs and Lab members, CM and Consortium staff in a professional manner; resolve researcher concerns
  • Self Management
  • Prioritize assignments to complete work in a timely manner. Work efficiently under changing conditions and dynamic scheduling. Complete duties effectively and efficiently with limited supervision
  • Team Work Work as a team with other CM staff as needed. Become cross-trained in order to serve as back-up for other CM services and organizational staff as needed. Work on call, weekend, evening, or holiday shifts as part of a rotation, as needed or as assigned

  • Follow safe animal and equipment handling guidelines and SOPs

  • Manage a murine breeding colony

  • Maintain and prepare laboratory reagents, stocks and media. Clean and autoclave surgical instruments and maintain laboratory equipment (clippers, pipet holders, scope etc.) and track inventory levels, restock and reorder surgical supplies

  • Support maintenance of specimen samples, process and store specimen samples and thaw and prepare frozen samples for implantation. Maintain accurate logs. Coordinate with customers and collaborators on sample pick and delivery

  • Assist PDX Lead as directed, and perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or associate degree in animal science or related field

  • Minimum one year of murine handling experience

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new systems and techniques

  • Basic understanding of translational research using in vivo models

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in performing research using murine models

  • Experience in murine aseptic surgery

  • Experience performing lab bench work

  • Experience as a Veterinary Technician

  • AALAS certification at the LAT level is recommended, and persons hired for this position should continue to pursue this certification as soon as possible once eligible until achieved

Careers Start Here. Responsibilities The Stem Cell and Gene Therapy (SCGT) program at Fred Hutch is recruiting a Research Technician II, with a focus on bench research duties. Bench research experiments will support multiple projects within the laboratory, under the supervision of senior laboratory staff and the PI. Duties may include processing and analysis of primary blood and tissue samples for flow cytometry, next generation sequencing, and PCR-based analysis of cell populations, sterile cell culture work with cell lines and primary cells including hematopoietic stem cells, genetic engineering of cells using gene therapy or gene editing methods. The candidate must also be comfortable working with potentially infectious material and biosafety level 2+ techniques. Qualifications Research Tech I - Bachelor's degree in a biological science is required. Prior laboratory research experience is preferred. Research Tech II - Bachelor's degree in a biological science and two years of relevant laboratory research experience is required. The individual must possess knowledge of basic biological and molecular assays and experience with performing these techniques. Experience is preferred in one or more of the following areas: hematopoietic stem cell cultures/model systems, in vivo gene therapy studies, flow cytometry/flow-assisted cell sorting, and/or molecular biology techniques e.g. quantitative PCR, cell transduction using viral vectors, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing. The ideal candidate would be familiar with computer programs including Microsoft Office, FlowJo, Graphpad Prism, sequencing-based softwares, online spreadsheet sharing documentation, and/or similar products. To be successful in this position, the candidate must be highly motivated, execute experiments, possess a great attention to detail, and must also be able to multi-task and prioritize work at short notice.
