Job Title: Prekindergarten Blend (SPED) Teacher

Reports To: Principal

Contract Days: 184 Days

Starting Base Pay: Based on Teacher Salary Scale

Primary Purpose:

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Provide special education students with accommodations and supports that allow them to access age and grade level appropriate learning activities and experiences like their non-disabled peers. Work in general education, self-contained, team, departmental, co-teach, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or related training and work experience for certification

waivers under the District of Innovation Plan (DOI)

Texas Special Education Teacher Certification

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of core academic subject assigned

Knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Knowledge of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation

Knowledge of the special education process Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

General knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Ability to work with children with varied disabilities

Ability to understand and use data

Growth mindset

Ability to communicate effectively

Experience:

Completion of student teaching or approved internship, preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Planning & Instructional Strategies

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as needed and required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual student differences.

  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of student's assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

  • Conduct assessments of learner needs related to the grade level curriculum (i.e., cognitive processes; learning styles, etc.) and use the result to plan for instructional activities.

  • Collaborate with learners, parents, and other members of staff to develop an IEP through the ARD Committee process for each learner assigned.

  • Participate in ARD/IEP Committee meetings on a regular basis.

  • Work cooperatively with classroom educators to provide needed accommodations and/or modifications to the general education curricula and classroom activities to ensure full access for learners eligible for special education.

  • Design and implement a plan to develop learners' self-advocacy skills.

  • Assist in the development of personal care plans and provide personal care services that include, but is not limited to toileting, diapering and feeding assistance.

  • Plan and assign work to instructional aide(s) and volunteer(s) and oversee completion.

Student Growth and Development

  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.

  • Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

  • Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment materials, and facilities.

  • Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

  • Communicate with students or parents on a regular basis via phone or video conference, email, or district-approved website.

  • Maintain confidentiality with respect to personally identifiable information of learners and their families.

  • Consult district and community resources, as appropriate, regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of learners.

  • Complete and send Progress Reports on IEP goals to parents as specified in the ARD/IEP.

  • Communicate professionally and effectively with instructional assistants to ensure student success.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Set professional goals; seek out and participate in professional learning experiences to improve job-related skills.

  • Display emotional maturity and a positive attitude in contacts with learners, parents, staff, and community.

  • Set an example of and encourage socially acceptable behavior in the areas of appearance, communications, and behavior.

  • Possess physical competency necessary for performance of assignments.

  • Serve as case-manager for assigned learners eligible for special education and provide professional development and consultation as needed with other members of the instructional and related services team to meet each learners IEP.

  • Adhere to the principles as listed in the Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.

  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.

  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
