Job Description:

Performs vascular studies on assigned patients. Maintains and equips machines for the daily workload. Performs organizational tasks within the laboratory and collaborates with vascular surgeons to promote appropriateness of studies.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Performs vascular studies on referred patients.

  • Evaluates patient's medical status and medications prior to study.

  • Measures and calculates pressures and pulse on peripheral arteries and veins throughout body (carotid, aorta, femoral, popliteal, saphenous).

  • Conducts studies referred by vascular surgeon or other internist or specialists, as ordered.

  • Notifies reading physician when study needs to be reviewed.

  • Operates ultrasonic diagnostic equipment and plethysmography equipment to examine various parts of the body such as upper and lower extremity venous and arterial duplex and/ or ABI/pvr, carotid duplex, trans-cranial duplex/Doppler, visceral vascular, graft surveillance, vein mapping, EVAR / abdominal aortic duplex.

  • Maintains equipment by cleaning it and keeping it fully equipped for use.

  • Washes the machines after each patient use.

  • Ensures equipment is stocked with necessary supplies to perform daily vascular studies.

  • Prepares and transmits related reports, as required.

  • Performs organizational tasks within the department.

  • Organizes workload.

  • Maintains filing and enters vascular studies into database to remain current.

  • Uses Infection Control practices and procedures including, but not limited to, ensuring sterilized materials meet standards; hand washing and gloving techniques; identifies, monitors and adheres to sterile boundaries.

  • Performs related duties, as required.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited medical sonography program, required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of arterial and venous duplex imaging, carotid duplex, trans-cranial duplex/Doppler, abdominal aortic /IVC duplex, ankle brachial index (ABI), Pulse Volume Recordings and segmental pressures, required.

  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) with American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) with Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), required.

  • Minimum of one (1) year technical experience in vascular technology, required.

Carries out Physician orders including, but not limited to, assisting with procedures, administering injections, performing phlebotomy, taking patient calls, cleaning and stocking exam rooms, calling in prescriptions, coordinating supply levels, pre-certifying patients medical services and assisting with other day-to-day operations of the office. Responsibilities Include: 1. Performs patient vital signs, ECG and other required tests, record patient history, obtain accurate medication list and any information the physician may request to enable him/her to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. 2. Explains normal and abnormal test/lab results to patients and their significant others. 3. Educates patient regarding medications, invasive and non-invasive procedures. 4. Serves as a resource to clinical and non-clinical staff. 5. Communicates with patients, visiting nurses and other physician offices. 6. Schedules and processes paperwork for patient tests, cardiac catheterizations and other invasive procedures, labs, device procedures or office appointments. Calls in prescriptions. Arranges hospital admissions. 7. Priorities medical/emergency phone calls; handles according to office protocol. 8. Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked appropriately and ready for next patient; ensure equipment is clean/sterile and in working order. 9. May schedule other clinical staff. 10. Performs related duties, as required. Qualifications * Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing, required. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, preferred. Must be enrolled in an accredited program within 24 months of employment, if hired after January 1, 2010 and obtain a BSN Degree within five (5) years of employment date. * Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State * BCLS, required.
