Summary

The Psychiatric Acute Recovery Center (PARC) is a 28 bed inpatient adult male/female psychiatric unit that provides care to patients with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses. The major diagnosis reasons for admission include the following: psychoses, substance abuse and dependence disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), organic disorders and neuroses.
Responsibilities

Patients are provided therapeutic modalities, to include electro-convulsive (ECT) therapy and rehabilitative services that include group therapy or education, one-to-one education and/or counseling and medication management. The interdisciplinary team meets each week to discuss care planning and discharge needs of patients.

Allied health team providers provide psychological testing and counseling, social services, vocational counseling, and recreational therapy. The nursing needs of patients are evaluated using the nursing process and care is individualized through interdisciplinary approaches of care. Care is focused on providing a protective environment for those requiring protection from self-injury and/or injury to others resulting from identified diagnoses and psychiatric illnesses.

Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nursing assistants provide nursing care. The LPN will functional dependent of the RN Assessment and clinical direction.

Nursing staff members from psychiatry additionally provide nursing support in psychiatric outpatient clinics. One of these clinics, the Mental Health Acute Care Clinic (MHACC) serves as a walk-in outpatient clinic, which provides patient assessments, coordination of care, completion of clinical reminders with health education and counseling, assistance to veterans and their families with crisis calls.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State [ ] agency and/or [accredited by] the National League for Nursing [Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)] at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency [or] the National League for Nursing [Accrediting Commission], 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006. (1) Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment.
(2) [ ] VHA employees who were converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) in implementation of Public Law 98-160, enacted November 21, 1983, and for VHA employees converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7405 in implementation of Public Law 99-576, enacted October 28, 1986; and for their future personnel actions under this authority. The waiver will not apply to persons appointed under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) or 7405 after these conversions.

English Language Proficiency. Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in [both] spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

Preferred Experience:
A minimum of two years successful nursing practice in Medical-Surgical area
Minimum of 1 year successful nursing practice on an in-patient psychiatry unit
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with patients, families and other members of the interdisciplinary team
Demonstrated skills in decision-making, sound clinical judgment and critical-thinking abilities
Demonstrated ability to use computer systems in support of patient care delivery

Grade Determinations: Salary will be determined by a Professional Standards Board.

Physical Requirements:

The incumbent must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction. This position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, sitting, and turning. The work may involve going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level sufficient to provide safe and effective nursing care. The incumbent should have the ability to physically control or protect him/herself from physically abusive patients.

We provide programming at three locations, with our residential treatment centers set in an idyllic, rural farmhouse in Durham, North Carolina, and a community-based day treatment and intensive outpatient center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Many people who struggle with eating disorders also struggle with other mental health disorders, and our programs are designed to treat co-occurring depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, substance use disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder, among others.
