The Powertrain Controls Engineer - Torque Control is a key position that modifies or creates production software-ready algorithms for the torque controls which can be turned into software in operation on our Global Powertrain Electronic Control (GPEC). The successful candidate will join a growing team at FCA US Headquarters and Technology Center (CTC) and work with their counterparts at Chelsea Proving Grounds (CPG). The Engineer will work in multi-disciplinary "Feature Teams" who are responsible for delivering embedded software for the GPEC ECU family.

Job responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Provide status on changes to torque algorithms and torque issue resolution status to powertrain coordination and torque controls feature team leader, or Project Management Coordinators (PMCs)

  • Participate in high-level, function requirements and FMEA development for new strategies with systems engineers

  • Prepare preliminary calibrations for software and controls verification and validation

  • Use Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) instrumentation or a vehicle to acquire data or other data sources to verify the new algorithms

The gasoline engine controls team has opportunities to provide exciting and challenging assignments to an experienced powertrain and engine control algorithm development engineers in the areas of:

  • Integrated powertrain control (torque characterization, engine/transmission interactions, powertrain optimization strategies)

  • Gas exchange processes (valve control, turbocharging, EGR, tumble flap, etc.) include utilization of sensors in feedback and feedforward control strategies

  • Alternator and electrical load management

  • Cruise control Algorithm development, done using MATLAB-Simulink

  • Rapid prototyping tools

The work is performed in the vehicle, dynamometer and/or simulator environment. The successful candidate will use these tools to develop algorithms and follow the development through to production software, including the development of all supporting documentation (includes DFMEA, testing and validation reports) and calibration guides.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or graduate degree relevant to engineering (I.e. Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Computer Information)

  • Minimum 5 years of experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Proficient in MATLAB/Simulink

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

  • Automotive experience at work or university, such as Formula SAE, SAE EcoCAR, or other university automotive activity

  • 1 or more years ETAS INCA tool experience for collecting embedded data

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams

  • Strong project coordination skills

  • Understanding of the development of embedded software

  • Understanding of gasoline engine combustion and principles of after treatment

  • Flexibility -- must be able to adapt to changing environment with minimal effect on productivity

  • Ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels of management

The overall goal for the team is to develop a complete electrified powertrain that meets the vehicle functional requirements for fuel economy, emissions, drivability, and diagnostics. The ideal candidate, who must be a strong team player and willing to work in a fast-paced environment, would have a strong background in classical and advanced control theories as it applies it vehicle hybridization. Basic Qualifications: * Bachelors of Science in Applied Physics, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or Computer Engineering, or related engineering field from an ABET accredited university * Minimum 5 years of engineering experience * Demonstrated technical problem solving * Strong overall knowledge of vehicle and powertrain functions * Experience with modeling, simulation, development, testing, calibration and/or validation * Outstanding interpersonal and problem solving skills Preferred Qualifications: * Master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related engineering field from an ABET accredited university * Specialization in classical and modern control disciplines with vehicle application * Embedded software experience * Knowledge of powertrain control system architecture/best practices * Demonstrated application of technical excellence * Experience with model-based development tools such as MATLAB/SIMULINK * Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as ETAS-INCA Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Auburn Hills MI
