Applicant must be proficient in performing repairs, maintenance, installation and troubleshooting of multiple mechanical systems, compessed air systems and heating plants. Applicant must also have the ability to read schematics and understand theory. Must possess knowledge and mechanical abilities to overhaul, repair and align pump assemblies. Applicant will be required to perform high work. Applicant must also work according to company and department procedures and practice safe work habits.

Applicant must be able to work overtime when required, support emergency situations as they arise and support department goals.


  • Basic tool applications and use.

  • Using rulers, calipers, micrometers and other measuring instruments.

  • Operating arbor presses, drill presses, grinders and other metal working tools to make and repair parts/equipment.



  • A High School diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years of mechanical/compressed air systems and heat plant experience in industrial and/or commercial environments.


  • Trade and/or technical school experience

The Welding Engineering Design Programs group is primarily responsible for the following: * Providing technical solutions, guidance and expertise on complex welding and brazing related issues to design including supporting review of structural and piping designs for COLUMBIA Class and VPM * Reviewing, administering, and interpreting welding fabrication specifications * Provides training in welding design to design and engineering organizations * Developing and maintaining company standards, procedures and best practices in the areas of nuclear and non-nuclear welding * Reviewing and dispositioning Engineering Reports and CR/CNs related to welding * Providing Welding Engineering services in the area of investigative and failure analysis of welds using various methods * Identifying resources, planning and assigning work, tracking progress and ensuring timely completion of work and projects within budgeted hours * Providing training and developing direct report employees' critical skills to meet department short and long term objectives * Interfacing with Electric Boat Engineering, Non-Destructive Test (NDT) Engineering, Operations and other departments, as well as SUPSHIP Groton, NRRO, NR, and NAVSEA as required * Contributing to annual self-assessments of Electric Boat's overall welding program and local welding engineering performance The successful candidates will report directly to the Manager of Welding Engineering. Responsibilities Skills: * Strong mentoring and team building skills * Ability to develop critical skills within a team * Ability to exercise proper judgement to decide between competing courses of action * Ability to motivate, direct, and understand others in order to effectively manage direct reports * Ability to effectively manage priorities and plan work to support customer needs * Ability to support internal and external customer needs * Ability to effectively communicate with direct reports, Manager, and Director-level personnel Qualifications Required: * Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering discipline * A minimum of 3 years of experience as an engineer within Electric Boat Welding Engineering or; A minimum of 4 years of experience at Electric Boat or; A minimum of 8 years of welding engineering experience within commercial industry Preferred: * Bachelor's degree or higher in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Civil/Structural Engineering * Advanced degree in Engineering * Previous supervisory experience * 1+ year experience in a leadership role * Engineering experience at Electric Boat * Professional background in Quality Assurance, experience in an industrial environment, shipbuilding, or other heavy fabrication is beneficial * Familiarity with fabrication requirements of NAVSEA Technical Publication S9074-AR-GIB-010/278 and T9074-AD-GIB-010/1688 as well as qualification of welding procedures and welders to NAVSEA Technical Publication S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 * Experience with equivalent commercial (i.e. AWS/ASME) fabrication and qualification specifications is acceptable General Dynamics Groton CT
