Power Plant Mechanic

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies and procedures. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on primary Power Plant generators and various emergency generators.

  • Performs on-site troubleshooting, repairs and overhauls of generator engines.

  • Responds to station power outages and equipment failures as required.

  • Willingness to carry a radio or pager for after hour's call out's

  • Completes maintenance records and documents all maintenance performed and maintains operating logbooks and databases as required.

  • Schedules diesel engine/generator operations in order to maintain a 3000-hour spread between engines.

  • Operates Power Plant equipment in an efficient and economical manner.

  • Coordinates with the Power &Water Supervisor in ordering repair and/or spare parts, maintenance parts, assemblies and consumables.

  • Maintains control of plant tools, manuals, repair parts, assemblies and consumables. Maintains inventory accuracy at 98% or better.

  • Ability to work alone or within a team depending on situation.

  • Trains Power Plant Operator's on mechanical equipment as directed.

  • Ability to cover Power Plant Operator shift / rounds as required.

  • Advises the Power & Water Supervisor of the status of power production equipment and systems.

  • Complies with applicable Safety, Environment, Health, and Waste Management policies and procedures.

  • Supports the achievement of PAE and ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly affected by this position's work activities.

  • Complies with all Environmental Safety and Health and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Performs other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduate or GED is required.

  • Minimum three (3) years' experience required in diesel powered generators, marine diesel engines, or industrial diesel engines.

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once is required.

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and repair of diesel electric generating equipment is required.

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to diesel engines and diesel engine driven electric generators is required.

  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment is required.

  • Previous mechanical experience on 1MW and larger diesel engine/generators is highly preferred.

  • Previous Field Service experience is highly preferred.

  • Experience with Caterpillar documentation and software (ET, SIS) is preferred

  • Working comprehension of electrical distribution, control panels and medium voltage switchgear is preferred.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Training, certification or experience on Caterpillar 3500 / 3600 series engines is preferred

  • Experience working with remote field generators is preferred.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

The Associate Mechanical Engineer will lead projects in a dynamic and customer-oriented manner based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, and overall outstanding service. Responsible for fostering a culture of proactive communication, continuous improvement, and a focus on serving our customers and increasing our customer base. This position will assist with the development of a hydro strategy to further Burns & McDonnell's position. This individual will be experienced in design, construction, commissioning, diagnosis, testing, and troubleshooting of hydroelectric power facilities including primary equipment, balance of plant, and infrastructure. Specific experience in maintenance, life-extension, and modernization of existing hydroelectric power facilities would be an asset. The project scope will range from technical support and troubleshooting, to design services, to full engineer/procure/construct (EPC). In addition, this individual will be expected to interface and communicate with customers and key stakeholders on a regular basis. Visits to sites, customers' facilities, suppliers, and other miscellaneous travel to facilitate business growth is expected. * Manage mechanical design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers. * Assess feasibility or soundness of proposed applications when data is insufficient, or testing is advisable. * Participate in the development of construction specifications, project schedules, project budgets, project staffing planning, and construction planning. * Applies expert knowledge of commonly used mechanical concepts, practices, codes and procedures within the mechanical engineering services industry. * Applies expert knowledge and experience to complex projects, find non-standard design solutions. * Quality review the construction administration including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, field inspections and testing of mechanical systems. * Manage field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients. * Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications. * Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors and develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met. * Manage sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits. * Coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports or project design assignments. * Will have progressive design and project management responsibilities. * Manage the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance. * Collaborate and partner with internal BMCD global practices and regional offices to provide internal and external solutions to the hydroelectric power market * Quality review and approve project budgets and cost estimates. Report project performance. * Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the mechanical engineering practice. * Responsible for QA/QC process adherence and process improvement. * Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies. * All other duties as assigned. * Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program. * Or Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. * Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering a plus. * 13 years mechanical engineering experience. EPC project experience preferred. * Professional Engineering License (PE) preferred. * Minimum seven (7) years' experience working in the hydroelectric and construction industries, including five (5) or more years managing hydroelectric projects. * Experience successfully pursuing proposals and leading proposal efforts * Must have the ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment. * Experience with Kaplan, Francis, and Pelton turbines is a plus. Understand the related balance of plant systems related to Hydroelectric power facilities. * EPC project experience is highly preferred. * Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills. * Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment. * Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills. * Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications. * Ability to travel is required.
