The Mechanic performs maintenance installations, routine inspections, trouble shooting and repairs, both scheduled and unscheduled, to equipment, machinery, piping and components in the Central Utility Plant. The Mechanic stands watch as Stationary Engineer as required.


  • Performs preventive and predictive maintenance on equipment, machinery and components as scheduled and assists with mechanical installations, repairs and replacements as needed.

  • Completes, on-time, delivery of maintenance services to ensure compliance with company standards for cost control, quality, safety, efficiency and equipment reliability are achieved.

  • Works closely with others to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and company policies.

  • Operates and maintains assigned plants in a cost-effective, safe, reliable and efficient manner; Maintains safe working conditions; identifies, corrects and reports unsafe work areas.

  • Maintains customer relationships with all customers serviced by assigned plants.

  • Monitor assigned plants operations through various controls systems/technologies.


  • Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent.

  • 3 - 5 of years of related experience or training; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong understanding of maintenance and/or mechanical contracting trade.

  • Strong understanding of equipment related to heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) processes. This includes, but is not limited to, pumps, valves, piping systems, and compressors.

  • Experienced in working with boiler and/or chillers.

Requirements The Building Maintenance Worker performs general Central Plant work in support of the operation of the University's Power Plant, which provides heating and cooling for University physical facilities. S/he monitors, receives, and records fuel oil levels and receives incoming deliveries, ensuring an adequate supply of paper products on a daily basis. The incumbent ensures that all plant offices, bathrooms, and floors are kept clean, assisting in the maintenance and operation of plant equipment. Reporting directly to a Utility Plant Maintenance Supervisor, the Building Maintenance Worker has additional duties that include but are not limited to: * Ensures completion of general building structure and systems work to support University operations. * Responds to work order requests, written and verbal requests from users, and supervisor's directions to perform scheduled preventative maintenance, minor repair and service of building structures (carpentry repairs, painting), systems (plumbing, electrical), and related work. * Ensures that work is performed in accordance with applicable building codes and local government regulations. * Uses and disposes materials in accordance with applicable environmental safety and control regulations, keeping abreast of changes and new developments in applicable codes and regulations. * Ensures completion of paperwork to assure accountability and records actions taken in response to work orders and other requests, entering such information on forms, documents and/or into computerized record system as needed. * Fills out, completes, and submits such other forms and documents as may be required to assure that such information is properly recorded and submitted. * Suggests improvements in service to improve unit operations. * Provides supervisors and department management with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools, and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service. * As assigned, conducts tests or pilot programs to evaluate new products, methods or procedures, monitoring tests and reporting test results with recommendations to supervisor. * Ensures efficient and economic use of supplies and materials to conserve University resources. * Draws and/or requisitions supplies, parts, materials and tools needed to effect repairs, and uses such items economically to avoid undue costs, keeping the supervisor informed of supply/material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained.
