Oregon Health & Science University is always looking for qualified postdoctoral scholars to fulfill its mission of conducting leading edge research into new cures, new standards of care, and a better understanding of the basic science that drives biomedical discovery.

The postdoctoral experience provides individuals who have recently completed a doctoral degree with a full-time program of advanced academic preparation and research training under the guidance of a supervising faculty mentor. Postdoctoral appointments are temporary by nature and are designed to develop the postdoctoral scholar as an independent scientist and to enhance their professional skills for academic and non-academic careers.

Research is the primary focus of the Postdoctoral Researcher; however, typical duties and accountabilities include:

  • Conduct a specified program of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader.

  • Data collection, processing, and analysis.

  • Perform statistical analyses, including selecting the appropriate analysis procedure, setting up data for analysis, judging validity and reliability of data, designing and writing programs to perform analyses, and producing written reports on the result of the analyses.

  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as desired by the individual, or required by the Principal Investigator, Department, or OHSU in order to develop research skills and professional competencies.

  • Gain experience in the process of publication and grant writing.

  • Presentation of project results to internal and external parties.

  • Assist faculty researchers and other collaborators, or may act independently, in planning and designing research experiments; establishing priorities and recommending schedules, time tables and costs.

  • Acquire generic and transferable skills (project management, business skills, mentorship and leadership skills, professionalism, etc.)

  • Operate specialist scientific equipment.

  • Effectively use available technology to facilitate the success of the project.

  • Liaise with other OHSU departments, outside collaborators, and others to ensure success of the project.

  • Engage in fieldwork and writing of technical publications and reports.

  • May supervise staff, graduate assistants, or students.

  • May be responsible for training staff, graduate assistants, or students.

Job Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent experience leading to a PhD.

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject disciplines.

  • Demonstrate some research experience.

  • Demonstrate a capability of working within a project team to achieve results.

  • Demonstrable a record of success in appropriate/equivalent leadership and management role(s).

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.

  • Ability to work in a team, and relate to staff from a variety of diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Our programs are intended to span the continuum between basic and clinical science, in which discoveries are rapidly advanced from the level of molecular and cellular biology through animal models and ultimately into clinical testing. The development of this unique program in immunology and virology provides an important training opportunity for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at OHSU. This is why an important part of our mission is the training of young scientists in newer academic disciplines emerging at the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute. Work Schedule, Hours, FTE, Salary Range * FTE: 1.0, Full time * Schedule: Schedule varies * Salary Range: Based on years of experience * Location: Beaverton, OR (West Campus) * Job Type: Research Functions/Duties of Position A postdoctoral research position is available immediately in Dr. Afam Okoye's group for a highly motivated candidate to undertake projects focused on basic and translational HIV cure research. Studies will involve evaluating therapeutic interventions, including latency reversing agents, immunotherapies and therapeutic vaccines, with the goal of targeting residual HIV that persists despite combination antiretroviral therapy. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing experiments, including cytokine flow cytometry, ELISA, cytokine profiling, immunohistochemistry, data analysis, manuscript preparation and data presentation at relevant scientific meetings. Experience with nonhuman primate models preferred but not required. Position is located on the West Campus.
