The School of Engineering and Technology at Central Michigan University (CMU) is seeking a self-motivated postdoctoral research fellow to assist with the development of novel Anaerobic Membrane Reactor (AnMBR) configuration to treat blackwater, monitor pathogens and recover energy.

The position will involve independent and collaborative research, preparation and submission of peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication and research proposal development as well as training and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

The anticipated start date for the position is Fall 2024 and review of applications will begin immediately. This is a full-time benefit-eligible position at CMU.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Experience working in a biological and chemical laboratory setting.

  • Working knowledge of the following analytical techniques: gas chromatography, ion chromatograph, DNA extraction, microbial community analysis, quantitative PCR analysis, and culture-based enumeration and experience with statistical optimization and data analysis.

  • Strong academic record and excellent written and oral English communication skill.

  • Highly motivated, independent, and self-directed.

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experiences in AnMBR, membrane processes, and anaerobic digestion as well as quantification of the chemical contaminants and biological pathogens.

  • Previous experience in designing and running high-rate anaerobic reactor configurations (especially AnMBRs) with hands-on skills in water quality, sludge and biofilm, microbial genomics analysis and characterization.

  • Academic and/or research backgrounds in environmental engineering, biotechnology, environmental genomics, and/or bioengineering.

  • Familiarity with the following techniques: quantitative PCR and next generation sequencing.

About the Department

The School of Engineering and Technology (SET) is housed in the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). SET has four undergraduate Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, and Environmental Engineering), three undergraduate Engineering Technology (Industrial, Mechanical, and Product Design Engineering Technology), and a graduate (MS in Engineering) program. SET presently has 24 full-time faculty members. Courses are taught in an attractive 70,000-square-foot engineering & technology building which houses more than twenty laboratories and support spaces.
