The Bioinspired Light-Escalated Chemistry (BioLEC) Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) at Princeton University was established to unite basic energy science research in order to enable unprecedented opportunities for saving energy in production processes for new fuels and chemicals. BioLEC aims to address the basic scientific challenge of precisely breaking and selectively editing molecules using the power of light.
While this breakthrough goal has long been sought, success has proven immensely challenging because many chemical bonds are too strong to be transformed by the present state-of-the-art chemistry. The BioLEC Center hypothesizes how two (or more) photo-excitations could be used to propel more powerful chemical reactions. To achieve this goal, we postulate that control is essential in order to utilize sequential light absorptions to tune a catalyst "on the fly" during key stages of a reaction.
BioLEC is empowered by a scientific approach that unites basic energy science research-solar photochemistry, photosynthetic systems, and catalysis. Twelve investigators with a wide range of expertise will shift the field from passive solution-phase catalysis to photon-aided catalysis where two-electron chemistry is controlled. We seek applicants for postdoctoral or more senior research positions to join any of the several collaborative projects involving six institutions (Brookhaven National Laboratory, North Carolina State University, Princeton University, Michigan State University, Arizona State University, National Renewable Energy Laboratory) in our Center. Postdocs are expected to serve a leadership role within the Center, including working with the Project Coordinator to provide frequent research progress updates.
