Position Announcement:

The Smith lab in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join their team to study how dietary components (e.g., prebiotics & vitamin D) affect immune cell function and disease risk in aging.

General Responsibilities:

  • The ideal candidate will have experience with studies involving human subjects and a strong desire to gain additional translational research skills working with cell culture and animal models.

  • Technical responsibilities include:

  • coordinating studies involving human subjects;

  • processing and analyzing samples;

  • carrying out experiments utilizing cell culture and molecular biology techniques (e.g., qPCR, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and single-cell RNA sequencing analysis);

  • data management including work with large data sets and data analysis;

  • communicating results including the creation of presentations (i.e., tables & figures), and writing reports and manuscripts; and

  • working with members of the research team.

  • Extensive experience in conducting studies involving human subjects, running basic assays (e.g., ELISA & qPCR assays), and culturing mammalian cells are preferred but not required.

  • Capable of working independently on projects, contributing to the preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals, and participating in weekly laboratory meetings to present and discuss research findings.

  • Experience in bioinformatics and cell biology is a plus.

  • The ideal candidate will be expected to demonstrate the ability to identify, evaluate, propose, and develop new experimental approaches, and generate and analyze data.

  • Candidates with significant experience with cellular and molecular techniques who have a strong desire to develop translational skills in performing clinical studies may be considered.

Skills:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and fluent in English.

  • Primary responsibilities will include studies involving human subjects and cell culture techniques. Some studies could involve the use of animal models. Training will be provided in all areas, but successful applicants must be willing to learn and work with ongoing projects in the laboratory.

  • Ideal candidates will exhibit strong organization skills, creativity, meticulous attention to detail, enthusiasm to train the next generation of scientists, and intellectual curiosity.

  • Ideal candidates will manage their time to meet agreed-on deadlines and develop plans for work activities on their own projects within a team.

  • Ideal candidates will demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and commitment to rigor and reproducibility of science.

Basic Qualifications

Education:

Doctoral or Terminal degree required. Candidates with doctoral degrees (Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D.) in biomedical sciences, nutritional sciences or other closely related fields should apply.
