Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiac Biology/Development

Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School

We are seeking a highly motivated individual for a Postoctoral fellow position with a focus on identifying the mechanisms underlying oxidative stress-induced cardiac dysfunction and the impact of perinatal redox stress on cardiac maturation and its subsequent effect on long-term cardiovascular health.

Our research program is focused on unraveling the link between prematurity and heart failure, with the ultimate goal of identifying new therapies. Currently, we are engaged in both basic and translational research, investigating the role of oxidative stress in regulating cardiovascular function and metabolism. We are using rodent models of disease, classical methods of gene and protein analysis, cell biology functional studies, high throughput studies and animal /cellular physiology and imaging studies.

The ideal candidate should have a recent PhD, MD or MD/PhD in the biological sciences, the ability to work independently, and a good background in cellular and molecular biology techniques including PCR, qRT-PCR, Western Blotting, co-Immunoprecipitation. Comfort and experience working with animals are essential, and familiarity with animal physiology/imaging, as well as high throughput and bioinformatics analysis is preferred but not required.

Job Duties

  • Organizes and implements complex research plans, the development of new methods, testing and data collection, analysis and interpretation of data, writing detailed scientific reports

  • Mastery of the relevant literature and continued monitoring

  • Mentoring and oversight of students and research assistant(s) in the lab

  • Presents research findings on a regular basis to both peers within the Department and at regional, national and international meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The candidate will be expected to possess superior communication skills and be able to communicate their research findings on a regular basis to both peers within the center and at national and international meetings.

  • Experience in mouse models, animal physiology, bioinformatics and computational biology are highly desirable but not required. In general, quality of past research is more important than experience in a specific field.

  • Exceptional teamwork and collaborative approach to science

How to apply: Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and contact information for 2-3 references by e-mail to: Dr. Fotios Spyropoulos, Department of Pediatric Newborn Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston MA. fspyropoulos@bwh.harvard.edu
