Post-Doctoral Associate in Carbonate Reservoir Characterization, Berg-Hughes Center for Petroleum & Sedimentary Systems and the Department of Geology and Geophysics, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas

The Berg-Hughes Center for Petroleum and Sedimentary Systems (BHC) and the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M University invite applications from individuals for a one-year contract position as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Carbonate Reservoir Characterization beginning March 2019. The project Co-PIs are Dr. Mike Pope and Dr. Juan Carlos Laya.

The principal responsibility of this position is to collaborate research in the BHC and Department of Geology and Geophysics on an industry sponsored project. This responsibility includes:

  • As part of the multi-disciplinary team, participate in the project and carry out the detailed core description and facies cancerization work

  • Carry out detailed petrographic and XRD studies to understand the facies variation and controls on reservoir variation

  • Work closely with a Petrophysicist and provide input for interpreting logs and subsurface data

  • Assist in integration of core, log, petrographic and well data to determine the field-wide variation in reservoir quality


  1. Responsible for data management and providing input suitable for reservoir modeling

Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in Geology, Geophysics, or closely related field. Applicants are expected to build and maintain a collaborative research program with colleagues in the College of Geosciences, the Berg-Hughes Center, the Department of Geology and Geophysics, the Department of Petroleum Engineering, and other energy related groups at Texas A&M University and the Texas A&M University System and with geoscientists and petroleum engineers in the oil and gas industry and national and international research institutions.

Minimum selection criteria for the position are

  • Advance knowledge of carbonate and sedimentary depositional systems

  • Good understanding of the principles of basin modeling and subsurface systems

  • Excellent understanding of the current challenges and developments in carbonate research

  • Ability to interact with geoscientists, geo-modelers, petrophysicist and reservoir engineers and participate in the integrated reservoir characterization studies

  • Past experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams is advantageous

  • Ability to interact with the Faculty and mentor graduate students of the Department of Geology & Geophysics in sedimentary research
