The University of Texas Permian Basin's College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biology welcomes applications for the position of Post-Baccalaureate Researcher.

$32,500.00 depending on qualifications

Essential Functions

The University of Texas Permian Basin's Department of Biology welcomes applications for the position of Post-baccalaureate Researcher. The successful candidate will conduct laboratory, field, and computational research on the bacterial communities (microbiomes) associated with insects in the laboratory of Dr. David Hembry, as part of an ongoing project in that lab.

1.Conduct independent research under supervision of Dr. David Hembry in the Department of Biology in the area of laboratory biology and evolutionary ecology.

2.Conduct fieldwork in Texas (state parks, state natural areas) collecting insect specimens.

3.Laboratory extraction and amplification of bacterial DNA via PCR from these specimens.

4.DNA sequencing and analysis of data using standard bioinformatics software for bacterial community analysis.

5.Present results of research at one or more academic conferences.

6.Train undergraduate students in laboratory biology techniques.

Required Qualifications

1.Bachelor's degree in Biology or a closely related field. (Individuals without a Bachelor's degree, or who have enrolled in a graduate program, are not eligible.)

2.Prior experience with DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.

Preferred Qualifications

1.Past independent research experience in biology.

2.Past fieldwork experience.

3.Interest in advancing to biology graduate programs.

Schedule

Generally, the hours for this position are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Hours worked may differ with some departments.

Standard Working Conditions

1.Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.

2.Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.

3.Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.

4.Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.

5.Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.
