We are currently seeking a Portfolio Manager. The Portfolio Manager will be responsible for underwriting, credit monitoring and portfolio management. Primary performance responsibilities include analyzing financial data to determine the merits of loan requests, recommending structure.


  • Manages and oversees loan/deposit portfolio for relationship manager/team.

  • Cross-sell deposit, trade, treasury management, foreign exchange, private banking, asset management, and other services to our existing client base as well as prospects

  • Work with team in reviewing existing credits

  • Perform other administrative duties required for the maintenance of a portfolio of clients

  • Ensure the portfolio administration and risk management of each client relationship is in compliance with established EWB credit policy, procedure and business strategy as well as commercial and regulatory guidelines

  • As appropriate to experience, co-manage commercial relationships by analyzing financial data to determine the merits of specific loan requests, and recommend structure as well as manage the client relationship

  • Responsible for credit risk and quality of the portfolio

  • Assist with due diligence/analysis on new client relationships and opportunity memos as appropriate

  • Partner with the Relationship Manager as the point of a contact for the client; acting as a liaison to the Credit Department, the Commercial support staff and other internal business partners

  • May provide advice and counsel to clients regarding trends and conditions of the business environment, capital markets and general banking trends

  • Monitor loan repayment activities and financial condition of borrowing clients and take necessary action to collect past due accounts and ongoing repayment ability of all other accounts. May assume overall responsibility for the credit quality of the loan portfolio

  • May make presentations on specific loans and participate in the bank's Loan Approval Process, recommending approval and appropriate structure of credits

  • Manage the renewal process by working with the Relationship Manager, the client, and Credit Department

  • May act as a contact manager for non-borrowing accounts and loan clients for matters relating to other banking services

  • Participates in community and business functions/groups to ensure a positive image for the bank within the region's marketplace

  • Perform other duties and special projects as needed


  • Bachelor's degree or combination of education and directly related experience

  • Ideally has 5-7 years of banking experience with a minimum of 3-4 years of direct portfolio management experience

  • Demonstrates strong underwriting and projection skills

  • Has strong understanding of credit policy and procedures and is able to accurately risk-rate loans/credits, evaluates both cash-flow and collateral-based loans/credits

  • Develop problem loan credit solutions.

  • Has strong knowledge base in Treasury, FX and Derivative products and have demonstrated abilities in coordinating the resources of the bank to bring effective full service solutions to the company.

PM is expected to maintain close contact with these clients and leverage the relationship to identify and bring in additional new business opportunities, both in loans and Bank's other products and services. PM is expected to provide &quot;best-in-class&quot; service to these loan clients while following established Bank's policies and procedures.</p><p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS</p><ul><li><p>PM is to work closely with Team Manager or Relationship Manager on the assigned loan portfolio by monitoring and managing the credit quality of such portfolio.</p></li><li><p>Maintain and grow existing client relationships, cross-sell Bank's other products and services.</p></li><li><p>Accountable for credit origination of new credits from established network and existing client base, portfolio monitoring, renewals, amendments and annual reviews.</p></li><li><p>PM is to negotiate and structure the primary terms of the loan with the client; circulate concept memo as needed prior to issuance of term sheet/LOI.</p></li><li><p>Work with underwriting team with the assistance from loan assistant and other loan support staff to prepare the Credit Commitment Report (&quot;CCR&quot;).</p></li><li><p>Present each CCR to the requisite approval authority levels. The finished CCR is the work product of a team but the PM assigned as account officer for the credit is ultimately responsible for the content.</p></li><li><p>Review loan documents, either internally prepared or by outside counsel, to ensure accuracy.</p></li><li><p>Work with loan assistants and loan support staff to ensure all necessary items needed for the closing of the loan is in process and well-managed; PM is to manage the client experience of this process.</p></li><li><p>Portfolio management functions include monitoring and managing the credit quality of the assigned loan portfolio.</p></li><li><p>Review to ensure each credit is properly risk rated based on the Bank's risk rating system.</p></li><li><p>Reviews client's accounts and portfolios in order to identify, evaluate and determine the appropriate course of action on potential credit quality issues in order to maximize credit quality and minimize risk and potential loss to the Bank.</p></li><li><p>Ensure compliance with Bank, regulatory and credit requirements with emphasis on best-in-class customer service while adhering to required timeframes from the client.</p></li><li><p>Assist with mentoring and coaching junior officers and loan staff.</p></li></ul><p>QUALIFICATIONS</p><p>Education: U.S. College graduate with major in related fields.</p><p>Experience:</p><ul><li><p>5-10 years of loan account relationship management experience, credit underwriting experience or a combination of both. Thorough knowledge of lending regulations and credit/underwriting practices.</p></li><li><p>Must have strong loan portfolio management experience specifically commercial real estate and construction credit.</p></li><li><p>Must possess extensive construction lending experience.</p></li><li><p>Must possess strong loan negotiation (rates, terms, collateral requirements) experience.</p></li><li><p>Must possess previous underwriting experience in the requisite area of commercial lending.</p></li><li><p>Must have extensive knowledge and understanding of Bank's credit policy, risk management, underwriting requirements and loan servicing.</p></li><li><p>Must have strong knowledge and understanding of commercial and specialty group banking products and services and have demonstrated ability to cross-sell such products.</p></li></ul><p>Skills/Ability: PC proficient. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual (English/Mandarin or Cantonese) a plus but not required. Ability to work well independently to restructure loans and/or lines of credits. Must be organized and detail oriented and able to multi-task. Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, high production and team environment. Excellent time management skills and be accustomed to working with deadlines. Ability to assume responsibility and accountability for decision-making.
