The Police Services Technician position performs a variety of technical and routine clerical duties in support of Police Department operations. This includes processing criminal and civil police records, preparing and redacting digital evidence for open records requests of in-car video and officer body worn camera systems, and the storage, protection, delivery, release, and disposition of evidence and property found and/or recovered for safekeeping.

An employee in this position provides support for police officers and criminal justice agencies, and provides customer service to the general public. The responsibilities of the position require special attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.

Position Responsibilities

Administrative Support. Prepares correspondence and reports, requests outside agency records, and transcribes audio files.

Collects documents and ensures document shredding is completed per policy. When necessary, serves as administrative support on major case situations (i.e. Metro Squad), including preparing documents and other clerical tasks.

Financial Management. Processes department invoices using the City's financial software system. Reconciles purchases made by employee purchase cards.

Document Composition. Creates and types documents including memos, other correspondence, and annual reports.

Proofreads typed copy, correcting spelling, grammar and punctuation. Scans and/or copies documents. Processes Requests for Further Investigation and Declined Prosecution forms from the District Court.

Police Records Management. Files information both manually and electronically.

Obtains information from files, computers, and by using microfilm equipment. Completes record expungements as requested by the Courts. Reviews crash reports before forwarding to KDOT and making available online.

Reviews police reports returned by the KBI with errors, and assists officers in correcting reports. Enters arrest reports into the Records Management System (RMS). Reviews various RMS alerts for errors, and makes corrections as needed. Ensures accurate records and files of the Department's evidence and property inventory.

Report Processing. Prepares copies of reports for officers and attorneys. Processes open public records requests, insurance requests, and record checks.

Mail and Fee Processing. Opens and distributes departmental mail. Accepts and distributes deliveries (i.e UPS, FedEx, Office Depot, Amazon, etc.). Accurately calculates, collects and records fees for reports and fingerprinting services.

Digital Media Management. Maintains and manages the police department digital evidence management system and retention.

Distributes police department digital evidence to federal, district and municipal courts. Redacts body worn camera and in-car video footage.

Evidence and Property. Ensures accurate records and files of the Department's evidence and property inventory. Receives, stores, transports, releases, auctions, and disposes of evidence and property items according to Department policy or practice.

Minimum Qualifications

This position is a part of a career development track that includes a I, II, and III level, based on an individual's level of experience. The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum that is required for a Police Services Technician I.

  • High school diploma or the equivalent, with course work in business related subjects.

  • Three years of experience in an office environment involving public contact preferred.

The hiring range for an entry-level technician begins at $19.50 per hour. Individuals with education and experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications listed above will be compensated accordingly.

Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the responsibilities identified in this job posting may also be considered.

Work Schedule

This position works Monday through Friday with a forty hour work week, 8 or 10 hour schedule. Occasional attendance at evening and/or weekend events may be required.

Overtime to assist in special cases (i.e. Metro Squad) may be required.
