Job Summary:

Sergeant conducts supervisory and official police work in a specialized field which involves assisting in the daily supervision of sworn and non-sworn law enforcement, security officers, performance evaluations, disciplinary tasks, traffic regulations, and performing special duties and/or comparable responsibilities within the mission of public safety which is to protect, serve and educate and which is accomplished through the delivery of comprehensive and integrated safety, security, access, and control incorporating emergency preparedness programs in partnership with the community served.

Education & Experience

High School diploma/GED and eight years of law enforcement experience currently in good standing or equivalent combination of education/experience. Valid Driver's license required. and Mississippi Law Enforcement Minimum Standards Certification within one year of hire. Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or similar area preferred.

Requirements after initial hire: ICS 100,200, 700, 800 within 90 days; complete one specialty training course including but not limited to Field Training Officer (FTO) Course, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training Course, and Taser Instructor Course, and complete first aid course and CPR instructor course within one year; complete no less than 25 hours of in-service training within 18 months and each year thereafter.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR REGISTRATION: Mississippi Driver's license and Mississippi Board of Law Enforcement Standards and Training Certificate.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Explicit knowledge and understanding of laws, ordinances, UMMC policy, procedure, rules, and regulations; knowledge of modern police tactics and methods; explicit knowledge of the laws of arrest, search, seizure, and evidence; explicit knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, and crash investigation; working knowledge of record-keeping, documentation, evidence collection, and preservation; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of officers; ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively formulate strategies and results; clear understanding of the interview and interrogation process; articulate in both writing and speaking; skilled in the care and use of firearms; proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The role is a specialized supervisory field and office police work. Duties involve assisting in the daily supervision of police patrol and traffic regulations or performing special duties and/or comparable responsibility. Employees frequently participate in subordinate officers' work and are accountable for their professional performance for the assigned shift.

  • Inspects officers and equipment, conduct shift briefings, assign duties to officers, and assign special instructions as assigned by superiors.

  • Actively patrol to observe officers performing their duties, gives positive instructions, and initiates discipline. Enforces departmental policy for the assigned shift monitors the morale and attitude of officers, provides advice, and sets the standard for professionalism on the shift.

  • Ensures that officers perform their duties following the policy of the UMMC Police Department, ensures that reports are complete, accurate, and turned in timely.

  • Guides and directs officers through criminal and traffic events, guides and directs officers through special and unusual events.

  • Police Sergeant will avail themselves to the officer when the officer request assistance.

  • Takes immediate action to prevent an officer from performing an unreasonably dangerous or illegal act, using force actions, using unprofessional or abusive language or gestures, sexual harassment, abusing a witness, suspect, or member of the public, disrespectful conduct, speech, or gestures to another officer or supervisor, failing to read or provide an arrestee their constitutional rights, and dereliction of duty, or any other unprofessional conduct/behavior that would be detrimental to UMMC Police Department and Institution.

  • Counsel officers when opportunities for improvement arise.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, bloodborne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, constant driving, frequent kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching , constant sitting, constant standing, constant twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
