Duties

Summary

This position is in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veteran Health Administration in the Police and Security Service at the VA Medical Center in Beckley, West Virginia. Police Officers protect property and persons on VA property, enforces appropriate criminal codes and regulations, assist patients, visitors and employees who require direction and/or physical assistance.

Responsibilities

The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Ensures compliance with and enforces a full range of Federal, State, local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they pertain to law enforcement work.
Fully investigates crimes which may extend beyond one duty shift. Interrogate suspects; take witness statements; collect, mark, identify, and preserve evidence.
Identifies signs of trafficking alcohol, drugs and other activities involved in the introduction of contraband on property.
Completes Uniform Offense Reports covering incidents on his/her shift containing pertinent information which is factual, classified properly and timely.
Responds to emergencies including crimes in progress or just discovered, disturbances, and assaults.
Issues citations for violations of law, rules, or regulations.
Preserves a peaceful environment necessary for medical treatment program operations.
Other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Rotating nights and weekends.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (or equivalent pay band), that provided a knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Qualifying specialized experience for this position (which must be clearly documented on your resume) includes: apprehending/arresting persons for violation of criminal law; conducting foot and vehicle patrol; maintaining control of a scene or incident; taking statements from witnesses/suspects and advising them of their rights; and preparing detailed reports of criminal offenses, violations, incidents, and citations issued; and presenting testimony in court.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: You must also meet all of the following additional requirements for police officer positions:
Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he/she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. (DO NOT SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR LICENSE. WE ARE PROHIBITED FROM ACCEPTING PHOTO IDs. If you are called for an interview, you will be required to provide a copy of your license.)
VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm qualification/certification.
New VA Police Officers are required to attend a 10-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty.
A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.
A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.
Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. Applicants and employees must possess emotional and mental stability. A psychological examination is required. Physical Requirements:
The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, long hours of standing, walking, driving and similar activities.

Employee must respond to alarms, pursue suspects, participate in training activities, climb stairs and walk during assigned foot patrols in and around large building, campus, and other physical settings. Agility, dexterity, and strength are needed to pursue, apprehend and detain uncooperative suspects. On a regular and recurring basis, the work requires strenuous exertion physically restraining disorderly individuals to prevent harm to others or the individual.

Must also be physically able to lift or carry injured/hurt persons, evacuate persons to safety during storms, disasters, fires or other emergencies. Employee is expected to maintain a high standard of physical fitness and hand and eye coordination in order to maintain the semi-annual qualification with assigned firearm and departmental issued intermediate weapons. Strenuous physical exertion is also required during many training activities such as those related to weapons training, Active Threat Response training and Ground Defense and Recovery training.
