Police Officer Transfer Opportunity

The Westwood Police Department is currently seeking qualified transfer candidates to fill openings for the full-time position of Police Officer. The Westwood Police Department is a progressive, non-civil service law enforcement agency that works closely with our public safety colleagues and all stakeholders in our community.

The Town of Westwood is a growing community with more than 1.5 million sq. ft. of retail shopping, office space and residential development with a resident population of approximately 16,000 people. Westwood is an extremely safe and engaged community, supportive of public safety, located in the metropolitan Boston area. The Westwood Police Department has top-notch equipment and technology and operates out of a new public safety facility (2017) within a supportive work environment and a collaborative management team. Officers have multiple opportunities for promotion, specialized assignments, training as well as regional job enlargement through participation in Metro-LEC (Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council).

Duties Include (but are not limited to): Patrolling specific geographic areas to observe and detect unusual activities; direct and expedite the safe flow of traffic and assist the general public in response to inquiries or requests for information; investigate crimes, burglar alarms, accidents and other emergencies; make arrests and/or take enforcement action for violations of law; gather evidence for criminal investigations; identify witnesses, victims, or suspects; prepare reports for court cases and appear in court as the situation dictates; serve warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers; maintain police weapons and department equipment as needed; operate police vehicles and monitor police activity by radio; coordinate efforts with other members of the department to ensure continuity of police objectives; maintain an understanding of federal, state and local statutes/ordinances to ensure appropriate enforcement and investigatory activities; engage with the community to assist with a wide variety of quality of life issues from crime, fear of crime, disorder or other areas to assist the general public.

Qualifications: Candidates must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, possess good problem-solving skills, and be able to enforce the law impartially, making sound judgments under stressful situations.

Candidates must either have graduated from a full-time Massachusetts certified police academy (MPTC), have completed the Massachusetts Bridge Police Academy (MPTC) and be certified to work as a full-time police officer, or be eligible for a waiver from the Massachusetts Police Training Committee (MPTC) for having attended a certified police academy and meeting the qualifications as set forth in 555 Code of Massachusetts Regulations 3.03(a). Candidates with a High School Diploma or GED are eligible to apply, however, candidates with a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university or an Associates Degree with at least (2) years active duty military service are preferred. Candidates with diverse personal, professional, and educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply. There is no age limit to apply, however, candidates will be required to pass proportionate fitness standards and pass job related medical screenings.

Candidates must be a citizen of the United States and at least 21 at the time of appointment. Candidates must possess the ability to obtain a valid Massachusetts drivers license and Class A License to Carry Firearms. Retirement is mandatory at 65 years of age.

Salary: Recently ratified CBA offers an annual salary range of $59,051 - $103,604 (FY25) and $75,819 $109,834 (FY26) along with a competitive benefits package.

Salary range is dependent on experience and education. Career Incentive Pay for ALL degrees (10% for Associate; 20% for Bachelor; and 25% for Master). Significant opportunity for overtime and additional income from extra duty work. Detail rates: $63/hour (FY25); $65/hour (FY26).
