Nature of Work

The City of Northglenn Police Department is currently accepting applications for non-certified Police Officers to attend the Police Academy.

Work is scheduled on a rotating shift basis (Days, Swings, and Graveyards), and includes holidays and overtime.

Salary $32.72/hour ($68,057/year), plus excellent benefits.

Officers on patrol perform a variety of essential activities and services that are both proactive and reactive in nature. Some of these include enforcing traffic and criminal laws, apprehending criminals, maintaining order, answering calls for service, conducting investigations and educating the public regarding public safety issues and crime prevention, prepares written reports and field notes of investigations and patrol activities, apprehends criminals and testifies in court.

Work requires extensive contact with outside agencies and the general public.

Duties and Responsibilities

Ability to operate an emergency vehicle during both the day and night, during routine and/or high speed operations; in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits while exercising due care and caution and in exception to traffic control devices; in congested traffic and on road and environmental conditions such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and/or snow.

Ability to use of a departmentally approved weapon (right and left-handed) with accuracy and pass regular weaponry proficiency examinations; to point flashlight and shoot a weapon simultaneously; to operate communications equipment while simultaneously driving a motor vehicle, during routine and/or high-speed operations; and to use departmentally approved defensive weapons.

Load, unload, aim, and fire handguns, rifles, and other agency weaponry from a variety of body positions in situations that justify the use of deadly force while maintaining emotional control under extreme stress.

Perform tasks which require lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects while performing arrest, rescue, or general patrol functions.

Perform searches of persons which involve touching and feeling to detect potential weapons and contraband. Subdue resisting subjects using hands and feet while employing defensive tactics, maneuvers or approved non-lethal weapons. Use body force to gain entrance through barriers to search, seize, investigate, and/or rescue.

Ability to self-plan, assign and direct work.

Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Ability to write clearly and concisely; use acceptable grammar, punctuation and spelling; write reports that are well organized, complete and accurate. Prepare investigative and other reports, , using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.

Ability to use a computer and software to process written work, including but not limited to, police reports, departmental memos and letters to citizens. Ability to written and obtain search and/or arrest warrants, as well as court orders.

Ability to detect suspicious or criminal activity. Ability to apply knowledge and reasoning to make prompt and effective decisions quickly in both routine and non-routine situations.

Ability to testify under oath in courtroom proceedings regarding police actions. Ability to evaluate and select alternative courses of action and make sound decisions in a timely manner.

Ability to step up to an acting supervisory role if and when called upon.

Ability to perform any additional assignments that may arise to include community projects, overtime assignments, etc.

Perform law enforcement patrol functions while working rotating shifts and hours, days, weekends holidays, and unanticipated overtime.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Associates Degree and higher desired, however, not required.

No previous experience is required for this position, however you must meet all federal and state requirements to be a peace officer through Colorado P.O.S.T. (Police Officer and Standards Training). You can go tohttps://www.colorado.gov/post/basic-certification to see the minimum requirements for P.O.S.T. and a list/description of anything thing that would be an automatic disqualifier from becoming P.O.S.T. certified. Upon hire you will be required to attend and successfully complete the Colorado P.O.S.T. academy and state certification test for continued employment.

Current academy graduates- If you have attended an approved Colorado Peace Officer academy and are Colorado P.O.S.T. certified, but have not been hired as a police officer, you may apply. If the academy you attended is not an approved Colorado Peace Officer academy, you will not be considered a P.O.S.T. certified officer.
