YOU MUST MEET THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW:  

  • Be a United States citizen (U.S. born or naturalized).

  • Have a U.S. high school education, General Education Development (GED) or equivalent.

  • Be at least 19 years of age.

  • Have not been convicted of any felony or of any misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement.

  • Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to, or is found guilty of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, not-withstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.

  • Have never received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.

  • Have good moral character.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Must be able to successfully complete an approved Police Academy Training program and obtain a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) certificate of compliance.

  • Physical Abilities Test (PAA): All applicants are required to pass the PAA test.

The test consists of the following requirements:

  • A timed mile run

  •  Push-ups (1 minute time limit-reps)

  • Sit-ups (1 minute time limit-reps) and

  • A timed 300 Meter run

  • The test is conducted in a continuous manner resulting in a total composite score.

To receive a passing score, the candidate must complete the PAA in a time period established based on minimum age requirements or less.

  • Must be able to successfully complete all City of Doral required pre-employment examination requirements. 

  • NOTE TO APPLICANTS* Proof of successful completion of BAT, or CJBAT is not required with the application, however candidates must successfully complete all of these exams prior to scheduling the panel interview.

  • Individuals who desire to enter a basic recruit training program for law enforcement or corrections must first pass a basic abilities test. This test was adopted by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission pursuant to Section 943.17, F.S., and further detailed in F.A.C. 11B-35.0011(1).

  • As of July 1, 2022, Florida State Statues , section 943.17(1)(g) states that any candidate wishing to enter a law enforcement academy that either (i) is a veteran as classified in section 1.01(14), F.S., or (ii) holds an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university is not required to take the Law Enforcement Basic Abilities Test. Please note that veteran is defined as being honorably discharged from military service. No other discharge classifications qualify. Please note that this does not apply to candidates wishing to enter a corrections academy.

  • The basic abilities test is sometimes referred to as BAT or CJBAT, which are the same.

  • Information regarding the content of the test is available through Pearson VUE.

  • The test cannot be taken more than three times per discipline during any 12-month period.

  • The test is administered only within the state of Florida.

This position is responsible for completing the Florida Basic Recruit Training Program and achieving a passing score on the State Officer Certification Examination. The Police Officer Trainee is a non-sworn position that will have to meet all the requirements established under the Basic Recruit Training Program by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement as outlined in Florida Statue 943.13. The City will pay the tuition and the officer examination fee for the employee to attend the basic recruit training program. However, the employee enters a 3-year commitment with the City.

This position is classified as a non-exempt, full-time position with a 40 hour work-week.

This position works under the general supervision of the Chief of Police or designee.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Timely attends and participates in all lectures, demonstrations, applications, formations, inspections, examinations, and any other gatherings conducted as a part of Basic Law Enforcement Courses and remedial training.

  • Studies, comprehends, retains, and successfully demonstrates attained knowledge and skills garnered from all lectures, texts, material, data, and any other sources of information on subjects presented by the institute.

  • Successfully demonstrates proficiency in all the designated high liability areas.

  • Maintains a healthy physical condition and demonstrates the skills necessary to agilely accomplish arduous and aqueous tasks, goals, assignments, etc.

  • Adapts and adheres to the conduct and attitudes required by training advisors, instructors, and administrators of the basic recruit training program at the CJSTC certified training school.

  • Is appropriately attired at all times as designated by the institute's Trainee Orientation Manual.

Additional Duties:

  • Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • Be at least 19 years of age.

  • Be a citizen of the United States.

  • Have earned a high school graduate or equivalent (GED).

  • Have not been convicted of any felony or of any misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement.

  • Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to, or is found guilty of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, not-withstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.

  • Have never received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.

  • Have good moral character.

  • Have passed a Commission approved Basic Abilities Test, if not certified and attending a Florida Basic Recruit Training Program.

  • Have successfully completed the Florida Basic Recruit Training Program

  • Have achieved a passing score on the State Officer Certification Examination.

  • Have been fingerprinted by the employing agency with prints processed by the FDLE and the FBI.

  • Have successfully passed a background investigation, to include drug testing.

  • Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician, physician assistant, or certified advanced registered nurse practitioner.

  • Have completed a CJSTC-68 Affidavit of Applicant Form.

  • 3-year commitment:

  • The City will pay the tuition and the officer examination fee for the employee to attend the basic recruit training program. However, the employee enters a 3-year commitment with the City. 

  • A Police Officer Trainee who attends such approved training program at the expense of the City must remain in the employment for a period of 3 years after graduation from the basic recruit training program. If employment or appointment is terminated on the trainee's own initiative within 3 years, he or she shall reimburse the employing agency for the full cost of his or her tuition and other course expenses.

  • An employing agency may institute a civil action to collect such cost of tuition and other course expenses as provided in this section if it is not reimbursed, provided that the employing agency gave written notification to the trainee of the 3-year employment commitment during the employment screening process. The trainee shall return signed acknowledgment of receipt of such notification.

  • The minimum standards for Payment and reimbursement are outlined in the Florida Statue 943.16.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be fluent in the English language.  Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.

  • Ability to study, comprehend, retain, and successfully demonstrate knowledge of various fields of law enforcement in the curricula of regularly scheduled Basic Law Enforcement Courses, or remedial academic or remedial in all high liability areas at a basic recruit training program at the CJSTC certified training school.

  • Ability to achieve and maintain a physical condition and skills to successfully complete any and all physical requirements included within those courses or training.

  • Ability to become proficient in all high liability areas.

  • Ability to adjust behavior patterns and attitudes.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, orders, and regulations.

  • Ability to maintain working relationships with peers and supervisors.

  • Ability to demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity in the community.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, coworkers, the press the general public and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, gender identity or sexual orientation.

  • Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of all city ethics and conflicts of interest policies. Strong understanding of ethical behavior is required.

  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

  • Ability to report to work as directed during an emergency as an essential employee of the City.

  • Must be a non-smoker.

  • The minimum requirements may be waived by the City Manager.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.

  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, word processor, calculator, copier, and fax machine.

  • Some crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling.

  • Physical capability to pass police physical agility entrance tests.

  • Physical capability to run, walk, and climb over rough and unfamiliar terrain, fences and other obstacles for extended periods of time.

  • Bend, accessing attics, crawl spaces, and other recesses of buildings.

  • Operate motor vehicle for long periods of time.

  • Ability to control persons resisting arrest; to move a disabled or combative individual.

  • Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
