$15,000 HIRING BONUS and How it Works.

Colton is excited to offer a Hiring Bonus to all new Police Officers. Here is how it works:

  • $2,500 at the time of hire
  • $2,500 at the completion of FTO and six (6) months
  • $5,000 after completion of the probationary period (18-month probationary period for new officers with no prior work experience)
  • $5,000 after one year on, past probation

TOTAL Bonus = $15,000!!

DESCRIPTION:

Under close supervision of a sworn peace officer, this non-sworn police trainee classification is designed specifically and solely for the purpose of employing police officer candidates in a non-sworn status during the initial formalized basic police officer training phase.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Incumbents of this class attend a P.O.S.T. certified police officer training academy designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the criminal justice system and specialized training in various laws, police practices and procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid and physical conditioning, and to participate in departmental training/orientation programs. Upon successful completion of a Police Officer Basic P.O.S.T. Training Academy, incumbents will be appointed to and sworn in as probationary entry level Police Officer with full police authority.

Essential Functions

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Participate in and complete a prescribed law enforcement officer-training program for the entry-level police officers including training in report writing, laws of arrest and seizure, defensive driving, California Vehicle and Penal Codes, officer survival and physical fitness.

  • Perform a wide variety of police support duties that may include dispatching and records, duties acting as desk officers and/or assisting in planning and research activities.

  • Operate police information equipment including computer system, teletypes and telephone to enter and research information at the direction of a sworn officer or police civilian.

  • Assist in processing, packaging, labeling, storing and destroying property and evidence; photocopies, files, indexes and locates police records and related paperwork.

  • Ride with officers to observe and learn peace officer responsibilities and techniques.

  • Clean and assist in maintenance of police officer's equipment and firearms.

  • Perform errands for the department such as transporting information and paperwork to court and district attorney offices.

  • Provide traffic direction and control for special events.

  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.

  • Assist in a wide variety of other tasks in the department as assigned.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Incumbents in the classification of police officer trainee are eligible for promotion to Police Officer upon successful completion of the Police Academy. Employees must qualify for promotion to Police Officer by successful completion of the Police Academy. FAILURE TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE POLICE ACADEMY WILL RESULT IN TERMINATION.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent. 21 years of age upon appointment. Weight in proportion to height. Vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes; free from color blindness. Hearing within normal limits. United States citizen or an applicant for citizenship within the past year.

Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and good driving record.

Additional Information

Ability to:

Successfully complete a training program for entry level Police Officers; learn, understand, interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures; learn to use and properly care for firearms; observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places accurately; think and act quickly in emergencies and judge situations and people accurately; learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system; understand and follow oral and written directions; write clear, concise and comprehensive reports; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contracted in the course of work; meet City and P.O.S.T. standards of physical stature, endurance and agility; meet the requirements for police officer contained in the California State Government Code; read, write, and speak English.

Skills:

Effectively operate a motor vehicle on City streets.

Recruitment and Selection Process:

  • Upload and submit California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) test scores with your application. An applicant must submit a letter from the testing agency on agency letterhead at the of application submission. Acceptance of other agency's T-scores is subject to verification with the test agency. The minimum passing T-score is 42.

The Recruitment process will include:

  • Application review

  • Written Examination (PELLETB)

  • Physical Agility Test (PAT)

  • Oral Board Interviews

  • Candidates that are successful in this process will have their name certified to an eligibility list that is valid for one (1) year. This list will be used to fill current and future vacancies as they occur.

Hiring will be contingent upon the successful completion of:

  • Background check

  • Department of Justice fingerprinting

  • Physical Agility Test

  • Psychological Evaluation

  • Polygraph Evaluation

  • Pre-employment medical examination

  • Chief's Oral Interview

Positions designated in the Colton Police Officers Association receive the following benefits:

  • Cafeteria Amount for the purchase of medical, dental and vision insurance is $1,425.00/mo effective July 1, 2023.

  • Employees hired on or after May 1, 2017, shall have a maximum cap of $500 for cash in-lieu or for the difference between the medical insurance premium and the cafeteria dollar amount

  • Up to 80 hours per year of vacation accrued for 0 - 5 years of service

  • Up to 96 hours of sick leave (8 hours accrued monthly)

  • 140 hours holiday credit (per fiscal year)

  • California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) for Police Safety:

Classic Members hired prior to 10/15/2011 benefit level is 3% @ 50

Classic Members hired after 10/15/2011 benefit level is 3% @ 55

PEPRA Members hired after 1/1/2013 benefit level is 2.7% @ 57

  • Post-Retirement Survivor Allowance (sworn)

  • CalPERS 4th Level 1959 Survivor Benefit.

  • Uniform Allowance $75 per month per fiscal year.

  • Longevity Pay: $100/mo for 15 years, $200/mo for 20 years, $300/mo for 25 years, including previous law enforcement experience in a similar position (non-cumulative).

  • FTO Pay $400/mo

  • Bilingual Pay $200/mo

  • City paid life insurance coverage in the amount of $50,000

  • City does not participate in the Social Security System

  • Probationary period: 12 months for Laterals; 18 months for non-Laterals
