Truman State University Police is excited to announce its new Police Officer Recruit program. This program will invest in the future of qualified candidates by sponsoring Police Officer Recruits in the police academy and providing career opportunities. Successful individuals are those who have proven communication skills, demonstrated integrity, have a passion for service and caring for the community, and have taken initiative to gain higher education.

The starting salary for the Police Officer Recruit position is $15.60 per hour with benefits. Upon completion of the police academy and receiving P.O.S.T. certification, recruits will be promoted to the position of Police Officer, making $16.60 per hour.

The selection process for Police Officer Recruit will be as follows and is based on the successful completion of the previous step:

  • Submission of application materials

  • Oral Interviews.

  • Background investigation.

  • Conditional offer of employment.

  • Post-offer conditions to be met for Police Officer Recruit:

  • Physical exam.

  • Drug Screen.

  • Psychological evaluation.

  • Successful completion of the police academy and receipt of P.O.S.T certification.

After graduation, new officers will be placed in a Field Training Officer Program for 6 weeks. From this point on, officers work 10-hour shifts: 8 AM to 6 PM, 4 PM to 2 AM or 9 PM to 7 AM. Shifts rotate on an every 3 month basis after successfully completing the FTO program.

Officers are expected to work weekends, holidays, etc. Overtime is earned after working 40 hours in a week. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Attend the next available Basic Recruit Training Course as an employee of the Truman Police Department.

  • Maintain an academic level which complies with the standards established by the Public Safety Institute and the Missouri Department of Public Safety.

  • Attend Police Department Training sessions in a variety of topics.

  • If the Law Enforcement Academy training requires less than 40 hours per week, employee shall complete the remaining hours in the performance of assigned training in the Police Department.

Required Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity the following requirements must be met:

  • Must be 21 years old at the time of graduation from the police academy.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED from an accredited school.

  • Must possess/obtain a valid Missouri driver license with a good record.

  • Must have no felony convictions.

  • Must sign the Police Officer Recruit Agreement. This agreement requires successful candidates of the Police Officer Recruit program to agree to work for the Truman State University Police Department for 3 years from promotion to Police Officer.

  • Ability to operate a two-way mobile and hand held radio; operate and show knowledge in the safety precautions of a handgun, shotgun, and other weapons issued or allowed within the realm of patrol.

  • Ability to operate a patrol vehicle under normal and emergency driving conditions; evaluate and react accordingly to an emergency situation.

  • Ability to deal with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others while exercising considerable discretion.

  • Must be able to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper cause of action according to law, departmental policy, and common sense.

  • Must maintain a working relationship with all members of the Patrol unit, and members of the Department, other agencies.
