DEFINITION:
A Police officer performs a wide variety of duties connected with general police work including investigation, general enforcement of laws and ordinances in the City of Superior and providing other various types of assistance to include advancing the mission of the Superior Police Department. The entry level Police Officer must successfully complete a 18 week recruit academy (if not Wisconsin certified) and 14 weeks of on-the-job-field training.The City will pay you while you attend the recruit academy AND pay for the recruit academy!

Work Schedule:Patrol Officers currently work 12 hour shifts, 4 days on - 4 days off (built in overtime included).
Lateral transfer Police Officer candidates are welcome to apply in this process!
A Lateral Transfer Police Officer must have one year of full-time law enforcement experience and be eligible to become a Certified Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer prior to hire. Upon hire, a Lateral Transfer Police Officer will be credited with their years of full-time law enforcement for the purposes of wage placement, vacation accrual, and minimum experience for Detective application. The Lateral Transfer Police Officer must successfully complete 14 weeks of on-the-job field training, in addition to passing a 12 month probationary period.

Employment Standards
Knowledges:Working knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement; laws and ordinances governing local law enforcement; first aid; and geography of the City of Superior and surrounding area. Some knowledge of court proceedings and proper investigative practices.
Abilities:Ability to successfully complete a recruit academy (if not already Wisconsin certified), and successfully complete a 14 week on-the job field training program; prepare clear and concise reports; operate a computer; speak clearly and effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department personnel and the general public; provide credible testimony in a court of law; use a firearm and other equipment; drive a police vehicle; work under adverse weather conditions; work varied shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; and use good judgment, integrity and tact.
Requirements/Special Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:
Training and Experience: Must be a U.S. citizen.
Must have no serious criminal convictions. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire. Must have earned a high school diploma or GED and completed 60 semester units of college at time specified by Police & Fire Commission for each testing process.
Must have accurate color vision. Must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/200 in each eye corrected to 20/20 vision in one eye and not worse than 20/40 vision in the other eye. A satisfactory history of soft contact lens wear for more than one year with vision corrected to 20/20 in one eye and no worse than 20/40 in the other eye, is also accepted.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
License Requirement: Must become certified as a State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer within one year of hire date and maintain such certification.
Oath of Office Requirement: Will be required to take an oath of office.
Driver License Requirement: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Residency Requirement: Must reside anywhere within a forty-five minute response time to the corporate limits of the City of Superior within 6 months of completion of probationary period.
Background Investigation Requirement: Must pass a detailed background investigation prior to hire.
Post Job Offer Psychological Examination Requirement: Must pass a psychological exam for the position prior to hire.
Post Job Offer Medical Examination Requirement: Must pass medical exam for specified occupational grouping and drug screen prior to hire.
