Position Summary:

This work unit exists to provide a safe environment conducive to and supportive of education at Fort Lewis College. This purpose requires many roles from unit personnel. The preservation of a peaceful community, providing physically safe grounds and buildings, enforcing federal, state, local and campus statutes and policies, protecting persons and property, controlling crime, educating the community on crime prevention, providing emergency services, assisting other College departments in their mission, providing security for special events and specifically providing a full range of professional police services.

Job Description:

DUTIES: This position is a training position for a Police Officer I at Fort Lewis College. Incumbent trains for a period of one year through either a combination of a Colorado P.O.S.T. certified police academy and with a Field Training Officer (FTO) to meet the minimum qualifications of a Police Officer I with the state of Colorado or, if already Colorado P.O.S.T. certified, through training with the assigned Fort Lewis College FTO. Along with the FTO, position determines whether or not a crime has been committed within the jurisdiction of Fort Lewis College. In the training capacity, position discovers all facts pertaining to the alleged crime, gathers and preserves evidence, develops and follows up on all investigative leads, located and apprehends the perpetrator(s), aids in the prosecution of the offender(s) by providing evidence of guilt which is admissible in a court of law, and testifies effectively as a witness in court. Position reports to the Corporal, Sergeant and/or Chief of Police.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

One year of college coursework (30 semester hours). Unofficial transcripts MUST be submitted at the time of application.

Substitutions:

Appropriate commissioned police officer experience will substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis, however, the candidate must be Colorado P.O.S.T. certified. If candidate meets both these criteria and passes all conditions of employment, the opportunity to promote to a Police Officer I may occur sooner upon completion of training and once the candidate meets the minimum qualifications for a Police Officer I.

  • Possession of current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.)certification will substitute for required education.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age

  • Must be able to satisfactorily pass a background investigation, demonstrating:

  • No Felony or Domestic Violence convictions

  • No more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver license.

  • No alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and no repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten (10) years.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

In addition to the requirements listed above, this position is an essential services position and must be able to work ALL shifts and in the case of emergencies, or inclement weather and in the case of covering a last-minute shift for another officer

  • Basic current valid Colorado P.O.S.T. certification is required at the time of hire or obtained upon successful admission and completion of a certified Colorado P.O.S.T police academy.

  • A final job offer is contingent upon the satisfactory review of the driving record by the College insurance agent and the satisfactory driving record must be maintained in order to drive a campus vehicle

  • Positions are subject to a background investigation in accordance with the administrative procedures of the State Personnel Director. The policy of the Fort Lewis College Police Department is to apply uniform standards of integrity and conduct to all employees without regard to assignment within the agency. Candidates must pass the minimum employment standards for Police Officers to continue in the examination and interviewing process.

  • Physical and psychological evaluations are required in accordance with section 24-31-303(5) (b), C. R. S.

  • Must possess and maintain a current valid driver license and must be in possession of the license by the testing date

  • In addition to the physical and psychological evaluations listed above, a final job offer is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a post offer evaluation of fitness for duty. This fitness test has cardio and strength components that must be passed. All candidates are encouraged to ensure they will be able to meet those requirements by actively conditioning now.
