Class Summary

The Gwinnett County Police Department is a nationally accredited and rapidly growing police agency located in the northeastern quadrant of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Department has an authorized strength of 930 sworn officers and 129 communications officers supported by 167 civilian employees with the responsibility of providing law enforcement services to approximately 900,000 residents within an area of 436 square miles.

The department is a full service agency with numerous specialized units, to include Computer Forensics, K-9, Aviation, Technology Research, Accident Investigations, Training, S.W.A.T., Crime Prevention, Hazardous Devices, and many more.

Employees are trained to become Police Officers. Applicants must pass a series of tests and interviews prior to selection as employees. Once selected, individuals must complete academy requirements, and if successful, continue to field training assisted by veteran officers (PO Master or Corporals). This job requires a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.

Salary:

$5,100 hiring incentive for new hires

$51,066 with possible incentives up to

$52,598 (includes 3% pay incentive for an Associate's degree)

$54,130 (includes 6% pay incentive for a Bachelor's degree)

5% night shift differential

The grade for this position is PL213.

Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D.;

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to be eligible for Georgia P.O.S.T. certification;

  • Valid Driver's License from state of residency;

  • Must be 21 years of age, 20 years old at time of application;

  • Must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation including criminal, controlled substance, credit, driving, work history, and physical agility testing.

Each department is run by a director who is charged with managing operations in a mannerwhich stresses the County's values.

In addition to the executive side of County government, certain services are provided through Constitutional officers and independent elected officials. These external offices are created by the Georgia Constitution or through state law. In Gwinnett, they include the Sheriff, Tax Commissioner, District Attorney, Solicitor, Probate Court Judge, and Chief Magistrate.
