Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property; for the prevention, detection and investigation of crimes; and for maintaining law and order. Work involves an element of personal danger and generally is performed in uniform.

Specific assignments are received from superior officers and are carried out in accordance and established rules, polices and procedures; however, employees must be able to act without direct supervision in meeting emergencies. Work is reviewed through reports, inspections and observation of results obtained.

Patrols a designed area in the city on foot, by motorcycle, or in a patrol cars, to prevent and discover the commission of crime and to enforce traffic regulations; answers calls and complaints; administer first aid; operates radar/laser equipment on speed checks; serves warrant.

Conducts preliminary investigations at the scene of crime and serious accidents, conducts searches of persons, crime scenes in order to gather evidence, locates and interviews witnesses; makes arrest and interrogates prisoners.

Directs traffic at interactions and at accidents.

Processes the scene of crime or accident (takes photographs, performs gunshot residue test) makes criminals record checks and writes detailed reports on computer and paper.

Makes investigations of complaints and crimes involving juveniles; makes referrals to court or social agencies, interviews and counsels juveniles, parents and other interested parties; checks areas or establishments frequented by juveniles for harmful conditions or influences.

Transports prisoners, mental patients and juveniles; takes custody of prisoners, maintains order, provides for their needs and supervises their activity; appears in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused or crimes.

Performs related work as required.

Graduation from high school or GED certificate; experience and/or training in dealing with public. Must be a least (21) years of age in good physical condition at the time of appointment.

Must hold a valid Ohio driver's license.  Must have the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certification. Currently certified as a Police Officer in the State of Ohio with a minimum of 12 months of full or part-time experience with a police agency.

Experience must be in the following activities: Enforcing state and local criminal laws and ordinances; Enforcing state and local traffic laws and ordinances. Making physical arrest; investigating traffic accidents; Operating an emergency vehicle; Responding to calls for service involving conflict management/mediation. All candidates for employment with the City of Youngstown must be a resident of Mahoning County or an Ohio County that is adjacent to Mahoning County at time of hire.

Each applicant considered for appointment will be subject to a complete background investigation, and the following: (1) A POLYGRAPH TEST/VOICE STRESS ANALYSIS (LIE DETECTOR); (2) A PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST; (3) DRUG TESTING; (4) CREDIT REPORT; (5) EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

WRITTEN EXAMINATION:   The written exam will be given on Thursday July 18, 2024 at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E.

Wood Street , Youngstown, Ohio. Starting at 6:00pm. (Applicants must file an application prior to the close of the application period with the Youngstown Civil Service Office in order to be eligible for the examination).

EXAMINATION BONUS POINTS: Bonus points will be added to passing scores (70%) for the following qualifications:

10% - Graduate with a B.S./B.A. from a college/university

  • Original sealed college transcript  required

10% -  Ohio Peace Officer Training Certificate

  • Copy of valid OPOTA certificate required

15%

  • Proof of City Residency - submit four (4) different proofs of residency from one (1) 

year ago and four (4) current proofs of residency - total of eight (8)

15% - Reserve Component Status

  • Proof of completion of initial entry-level military training required

20% - Military Veterans

  • Copy of DD-214 showing 180 of consecutive days of service with honorable discharge required

NOTE:           ALL COPIES OF DIPLOMAS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND RESUMES MUST BE UPLOADED AT THE TIME OF FILING.
