The City of De Pere is looking to immediately hire a Police Officer to fill one current vacancy as well as establish an eligibility list to fill future vacancies.

Current Police Officers

The City of De Pere offers an elevated entry-level salary through a lateral transfer program specifically designed for Police Officers with a minimum of one year of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer:

1 - 5 years full-time experience - start rate up to $70,104 annual base salary

5 - 10 years full-time experience - start rate up to $74,712 annual base salary

10+ years full-time experience - start rate up to $79,572 annual base salary

Vacation:Experienced officers with three or more years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer may be brought in at a higher vacation rate.

New Police Officers

2023 Police Officer Base Salary Schedule

Start - $61,727

1 Year - $65,832

2 Years - $70,104

3 Years - $74,712

4 Years - $79,572

Top Police Officer Salary (5 Years) - $84,851

Week of August 5 - Written Exam (virtual)

September 4 - Department Interview

The Police and Fire Commission will establish the eligibility list. Candidates placed on the eligibility list may be invited for a physical abilities test. There is currently one Police Officer vacancy to be filled.

The mission of the De Pere Police Department is to provide an integrated team approach to pro-active patrol, crime prevention, and criminal investigation utilizing city and community resources to improve the safety and quality of life in De Pere.

The De Pere Police Department has a number of specialty positions within the agency that include School Resource Officers, K9 Officer, Community Resource Officer, and Traffic Officer. The De Pere Police Department is part of the Brown County multi-agency SWAT Team, Brown County Mobile Field Force Team, Brown County Drug Task Force, and Brown County Arson Task Force.

Essential Functions

Conduct routine preventative patrol in designated areas of the City. Initiate contacts with both business operators and residents.

Respond to calls for police service. Attempt to resolve domestic disputes, disturbances and other incidents through counseling or referral. Mediate disputes among neighbors, and juveniles. Attempt to resolve complaints from citizens of the community. Maintain civil obedience at group functions.

Provide information and/or assistance to the public. Answer a wide range of non-police related service calls. Inform citizens of available services in the community. Promote crime prevention through community and educational programs. Make presentations to public and local organizations concerning crime prevention and related police matters.

Attempt to maintain the peace and safety of the community.

Provide for safe flow of traffic and pedestrians within the community. Investigate traffic accidents. Enforce traffic violations. Enforce state and local traffic laws and ordinances. Promote vehicle and pedestrian safety. Report unsafe road conditions.

Conduct criminal and non-criminal investigations. Perform surveillance. Conduct follow-up investigations.

Enforce laws and arrest lawbreakers. Make felony, misdemeanor, and ordinance arrests and issue traffic ordinance citations.

Prepare written reports, forms, and other documents as required.

Testify in criminal and civil court proceedings, and give depositions.

Maintain prompt, predictable and reliable attendance. Maintain the ability to lawfully operate a motor vehicle.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of contemporary law enforcement principles, practices and methods. Thorough knowledge of municipal, county, State and Federal rules and regulations related to law enforcement. Knowledge of First Responder and CPR.

Considerable skill in the application of modern law enforcement principles and practices through planning, organizing, assigning, directing and inspecting the work of varied police functions, and analyzing law enforcement programs and developing policies, plans and procedures. Skill in the operation of equipment needed to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including modern office equipment. Skill in the operation of motorized vehicles under adverse conditions. Skill in the care and safe operation of a variety of firearms, impact weapons, electronic control devices and chemical agents.

Ability to make accurate, rapid and independent decisions regarding interpretation of policy, laws and regulations. Ability to organize, prioritize, and perform work with limited direction, process confidential information with discretion. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with business representatives, elected officials, department heads, the general public, and other City employees with courtesy and tact. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Ability to utilize a computer and required software.

May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.

Minimum Requirements & Physical Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • United States Citizen.

  • Associate Degree or Bachelor's from an accredited college or university.

  • Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification.

  • Minimum 20 years of age.

  • Valid unencumbered Wisconsin driver's license and safe driving record.

  • Must not have convictions of any Federal felony or any offense, which if committed in Wisconsin could be punishable as a felony unless the individual has received an unconditional pardon.

  • Within twelve (12) months of the date of employment, establish and maintain a bona fide residency within a 30-mile radius from the center of the Claude Allouez Bridge.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Additional State of Wisconsin Minimum Standards for Law Enforcement Officers

  • Shall not have been convicted of any misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

  • The fingerprinting of the applicant, and with a search of local, state, and national finger-printing records.

  • A background investigation conducted by or on behalf of an employer.

  • The applicant shall complete a personal medical history.

  • A physical assessment shall be conducted within nine months prior to the applicant's first date of employment as an officer (i.e., pre-placement job related physical examination).

  • The applicant shall submit to and complete an oral interview (i.e., psychological evaluation).

Work is performed on patrol and in an office environment requiring good physical condition and requires ability to perform in dangerous situations under an inordinate amount of stress.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The primary duties of this class are performed in a work environment in which the employee is subject to potential personal danger. Therefore, the following physical abilities are deemed essential:

  • Lifting and/or carrying in excess of 100 pounds.

  • Must be able to hear and have correctable vision.

  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, stooping, running.

  • Ability to run, grapple to help physically control another person, climb, reach, apply leverage from unusual positions; enter cramped and difficult to enter spaces, low visibility and unknown dangers.

  • Ability to work out of doors in the field in varying weather conditions and temperatures, noise, dust, etc,

  • Tolerating exposure to cold, heat, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.

  • Ability to climb stairs; work at heights above 10 feet.

  • Ability to drive an emergency vehicle.

  • Ability to safely handle department firearms.
