Job Title: University Police Officer

Department: University Police Department

Reports to: Chief of Police, through the Deputy Chief of Police

Position Summary:
Primary responsibilities include enforcing state statute, Illinois vehicle code, campus patrol and supervising student employees, utilizing currently accepted progressive management philosophies.

Protect students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, property and facilities from accidents, bodily harm, hazards, fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry, by enforcing University rules and regulations, enforcing of State statutes, to include traffic and parking regulations and apprehending violators. Provide general information and assistance to the public, conduct criminal investigations and participate in community oriented policing efforts. Must embrace quality customer service philosophy, as subscribed in the departments Mission and Value Statement.

Provide general information and assistance to the public, conduct criminal investigations and participate in community oriented policing efforts. Community Oriented Policing includes, but is not limited to: friendly engagement with members of the community through talking and professional socializing, conducting presentations to the community on various topics and conducting programming (which has an educational base) for students to allow for a non-criminal related interaction with the students.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1.Patrol University property on foot, bicycle and vehicle, to identify hazardous conditions, take corrective measures to reduce or eliminate inappropriate behavior. Physically apprehend violators and facilitate arrests as needed. Reports directly to the shift Sergeant, Watch Commander.

2.Respond to calls for service, including but not limited to, locking/unlocking classrooms, offices, dorms and buildings. Provide motorist assistance for dead batterys and vehicle lock-outs and provide emergency medical response utilizing patient assessment, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator and basic first aid. Conduct investigation, prepare written reports, collect evidence, gather victim/witness statements of criminal acts and violations of administrative law. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
3.Participate in traffic and pedestrian safety initiatives. This will include seat belt safety checkpoints, radar enforcement of speeding, DUI enforcement, stop sign violations, parking infractions and pedestrian awareness campaigns. Also, participate in professional development through internal and external sources.

Residence Hall Resource Officer, FBI Liaison, Evidence Custodian

Evidence Technician, Firearms Instructor, Report Writing Software Manager

Bicycle Officer, Vehicle Maintenance Officer, Field Training Officer

Youth Officer, K9 Handler

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education: Associates Degree preferred.

Experience: Prior law enforcement experience in a college university setting.

Specific Skills:
Extensive law enforcement experience, to include, conducting criminal investigations, positive proactive interaction with the public and the ability effectively communicate in written and verbal manner.

Specific Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications: Current full-time certification as a peace officer by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, or successful Waiver of Minimum Training Standards. Current Illinois drivers License and be free of any felony convictions and certain misdemeanor convictions.

Supervisory Responsibility (if applicable): - Supervise Student Employees

Working Conditions: Must be willing to work varying schedules, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Be able to physically apprehend violators. Be able to perform duties and tasks that will place the incumbent in jeopardy and physical harm. Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation. Be fingerprinted for the purpose of a search of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any arrest and/or convictions.
