Departmental Overview

The University of California Police Department provides a full range of law enforcement services in support of the academic and public service missions of the University of California, serving a diverse community of more than 43,000 students and 14,000 faculty & staff in the vibrant City of Berkeley, at the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to the traditional role of a police department, we also carry out a variety of proactive educational, outreach and crime prevention programs. We pride ourselves in a professional and high- quality delivery of service, which we provide with sensitivity to the unique concerns of the University community.

At the Berkeley campus, we employ approximately 44 sworn peace officers, 70 full time civilian employees and 75 part-time students. We are interested in ethical, intelligent, creative and motivated candidates who possess the desire and talent required to address the unique challenges of our urban campus environment. We offer a wide variety of assignments and a public service experience unlike any other agency.

Responsibilities

  • Protects university employees, students, and the general public; patrols and safeguards university property; maintains law and order; and performs other related duties as required.

  • Patrols campus buildings and grounds.

  • protects individuals and/or controls crowds during assemblies or disturbances.

  • Guards property against fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry.

  • Answers calls and complaints, taking the necessary police action.

  • Takes proper police action at scene of crime (for example, administers first aid, gathers evidence, locates witnesses and makes arrests).

  • Gathers, analyzes, investigates and prepares written reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, thefts and disturbances of the peace.

  • Gathers/analyzes evidence, makes arrests, and appears in court as required.

  • May direct and control parking regulations and issue traffic citations.

  • Completes training and development and other duties as assigned.

  • Works with City of Berkeley police force as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge in the following areas: First Aid/CPR, campus streets, buildings, and parking lots, general law enforcement procedures, vehicle laws, use of firearms.

  • Able to observe situations analytically, impartially, and objectively, and to record pertinent information accurately and completely.

  • Comfortable carrying a firearm.

  • Must be a US citizen or be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to interact with a diverse community.

  • Excellent ability to use computer devices and programs and other modern law enforcement technologies and tools.

  • Thorough understanding of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends applied within the University environment.

  • Meet all other requirements for peace officers as established by law and the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.

Education/Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification/experience/training.

  • Enrollment in and/or completion of basic P.O.S.T. certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $48.20 - $58.26.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.

  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.

  • A $12,000 hiring bonus is included within compensation.

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Police Officer Unit (PA) between the University of California and the Federated University Police Officer Association (FUPOA).
