Salary:

$25.48 - 27.01 per hour, depending on experience. Plus, excellent fringe benefits.

Summary of Function:

Provides for the protection of the students, faculty, staff and visitor, as well the property of AWC, NAU-Yuma, U of A-Yuma, ASU-Yuma, and the Yuma Educational Consortium. Responds to requests for services from the students, staff and visitors of the educational complex. Patrols assigned area by vehicle or on foot and assist outside law enforcement agencies as required. Enforces applicable Arizona Revised Statutes and Arizona Western College Code of Conduct regulations. Conducts criminal investigations, traffic collision investigations, interviews, and completes written reports of incidents and arrests as required. Testifies in formal student discipline hearing, criminal and civil court, or before the grand Jury as required.

Typical Duties:

  • Serves Students. Proactively patrols campus building, grounds and other areas as assigned to ensure proper and lawful conduct of students, staff, and visitors to protect personnel and the physical property of the educational complex.

  • Monitors calls coming into the department, responding when necessary, providing requested services, investigating violation or crimes, traffic collisions, and preparing appropriate reports. Conducts proactive traffic enforcement both on campus and for the area surrounding campus properties. Assists neighboring agencies with calls for service as needed.

  • Conducts random security checks of all campus building and grounds, and provides opening and lock-down of these areas.

  • Provides security for school functions, including traffic control, and provides personal and property protection during such functions.

  • Provides transport of cash and other bank deposits.

  • Provides first responder emergency medical assistance.

  • Support and participate in strategic planning initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Written and psychological examination

  • Arizona POST POPAT agility test

  • Thorough background investigation including a polygraph examination, physical, drug screening including for steroids

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent college course credit

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • Holds a current Arizona POST certification or has a POST certification in another state along with a minimum of 2 years policing experience working in a state and is able to pass the Arizona POST equivalency test

  • Possession of a valid driver's license

  • Non-Exempt

Position Type & Work Schedule:

  • Full-time

  • 40-hour work week

  • Ability to work rotating shifts, nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge on college organization, operations, policies and procedures

  • Knowledge of State of Arizona Criminal and civil statutes, rules, administrative orders, policies and procedures, and applicable Federal rules and regulations

  • Recognizes duties, powers, authorities and limitations of a Police Officer

  • Informed on Arizona criminal justice and court procedures

  • Informed on modern law enforcement methods and procedures, including case laws governing arrest, rules of evidence, probable cause, use of force, custody of evidence and property, and search and seizure

  • Investigate procedures and protocols for observation of critical details

  • Learn geography, roads, and landmarks of College, City, and surrounding areas

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate, organize, communicate with a diverse population

  • Professional experience with confidentiality and the handling of sensitive information

  • Ability to complete all departmental and/or institutional mandatory training or development

  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, in writing, and in a public setting, and to relate to others in a professional manner

  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate actions to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public

Work Environment:

  • This position will be required to work in all areas of the campus

  • Inside and outside settings with different weather, lighting, and noise levels

Physical Demands:

  • May require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and negotiate stairs

  • Must be able to navigate various departments of the organization's physical premises

  • Required to operate and sit in a vehicle for extended periods

  • May lift, carry, push, and/or pull, at times a minimum of 25 pounds

  • May require periods of running or extremely heavy lifting

  • Must be able to perform duties in a variety of weather conditions

Travel:

  • As needed around campus

  • May be required to travel to other locations as needed to support department and institutional needs
