The Southeastern Louisiana University's Police Department invites applicants to apply for the position of Police Officer 1/2. This position is assigned to Uniform Patrol and works a 2-2-3 schedule for either 6am-6pm or 6pm-6am depending on assigned shift. This is a training series position that will allow applicants to be hired as a Police Officer 1 or Police Officer 2 based on qualifications.

This is a career progression position in which a new incumbent may be hired as a Police Officer 1A if they do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Police Officer 2A. For incumbents hired as Police Officer 1A, after minimum qualifications for Police Officer 2A are met and satisfactory performance has been established, the incumbent may then be moved to the Police Officer 2A job title.

Current Salary for PO 1: $18.58/hr SER

Police Officer 1: No law enforcement experience needed

Current Salary for PO 2: $19.88/hr SER

Police Officer 2: One year of experience in law enforcement work

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and be able to be certified through the Southeastern Defensive Driving Course.

Test Requirements:

Applicants must have a current Civil Service test score for 2100-PSE-Protective Services Exam for Law Enforcement in order to be considered for this vacancy unless exempted by Civil Service rule or policy. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience in law enforcement work.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for the year of experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have eighteenth birthday at time of application.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment.

May be required to complete a Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) course.

For some positions, evidence of POST certification must be submitted at the time of the application.

May be required to qualify annually with a firearm.

For some positions, applicant must be eligible for bond.

NOTE:

All classified jobs in State service with police officer and wildlife enforcement titles qualify as law enforcement.

Jobs outside State service that will qualify as law enforcement are those performed while commissioned with the power of arrest.

Military police in the armed services are law enforcement; security/guard duty is NOT qualifying.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
