Summary: Law Officer and Police One

Classification Summary:

Performs general patrol and operational police duties, such as making arrests and enforcing criminal codes and statutes; may assist in investigations or serve as a member of special teams or task forces. Carries a firearm.

Classification Standard Duties:

Assigned to Field Services Division and patrols assigned areas in a vehicle, on foot, or on a bike; works under direct and indirect supervision; may work shifts; files reports on incidents; conducts preliminary investigations; investigates traffic accidents; testifies in court; makes arrests and issues citations as necessary; directs and routes traffic; gives information to visitors; responds to intrusion and panic alarms; uses equipment related to law enforcement function; processes crime scenes; responds to and manage all types of emergencies; provides emergency assistance as necessary; and performs related work as required/assigned.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency

Required Education:Associate's degree (any field).; Required Experience:No previous work experience required.; Equivalency:2 years' experience as a certified PO; or 2 years' experience allowing for a combination of education (15 related credits equivalent to 6 months experience), and/or military service (honorably discharged), and/or certified PO experience.; Required Certification/License:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge and understanding of principles, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the job. Understanding of the University's mission, vision and goals.; SKILLS:Skill in verbal communications, crime prevention, the use of force to control and arrest, emergency vehicle operations, first aid procedures, and crash and criminal investigations.; ABILITIES:Ability to engage in stressful physical activities associated with emergency response and use of force situations.

Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

Ability to communicate in writing and orally at a high level, to include street encounters, report writing, prosecuting cases, and providing courtroom testimony and depositions. Ability to complete highly technical administrative paperwork.

Ability to gather and organize legal evidence.

Ability to complete moderately complex administrative paperwork.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Lifting Requirements: Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Risk: Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
